SMSTools is quite unmaintained. We just keep it compiling and generating 
binaries but we knew there are many bugs and crashes. Of course feel free to 
report the bug in the bug tracker and we also accept patches. Maybe running
it from a commandline window we can get more information.

Anyway, you can still use the more flexible NetworkEditor to build your own 
realtime SMS efects chain and even building your own LADSPA effect that can be 
loaded in audio authoring tools like Audacity. The only thing you will miss 
from SMSTols are some special plots (peaks tracks...) and some eventual crash.
