Problem trying to connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 box

I have downloaded SQuirreL 3.3.0 on my Debian 6 Linux box and it loaded great.  I’m trying to setup my Alias to connect to the 3 SQL Server 2008 R2 boxes on our network.

I can connect to these boxes remotely from my own SQL Server 2008 client on my Windows 7 box but when I try to connect to these SQL Server boxes from my SQuirreL client in Debian I get the following error:

Golden: Login failed for user 'admin-mxs'. ClientConnectionId:5dea83e5-3407-4d05-b307-84e826b4436f

I’ve tried entering the username with and without the DOMAIN NAME\admin-mxs but still get the same error.

Any help/direction would be appreciated.

Regards.

I can confirm that Squirrel does work with MSSQL2008R2 from W7 x64 using
SQL Server logins. I am not sure that Windows Domain logins work.

Are you able to configure your server to accept SQL Server logins (Mixed
mode)?

Re: Problem trying to connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 box

Hi John. Yes each SQL Server is setup to accept both Windows and SQL authentication (mixed mode).

I am able to login from my SQL Server 2008 Client via the management studio to each of these boxes. I just can't
seem to connect via SQuirreL from my Debian 6 Linux box.

Thanks.

I could see attempting to use a Domain login having problems in that
situation. Have you tried a SQL Server login? You haven't clearly stated

Bother.

Unfortunately I don't have Squirrel set up on Linux here (I need to do
that) or I'd test in my environment.

I might do that this week (I'm on vaca) and let you know if nobody else

Thanks John. I appreciate ALL your help.

Still trying to get a zip file to install on my windows box and see if I can get it to work just like you have it
working. Still prefer to get it working on Linux if I can.

Have a GREAT vacation!

Ok, since my last post I installed Squirrel on my Linux laptop (It's
gloomy here and this is better than sitting in front of the teevee...) and
confirmed it works against my MSSQL2008 dev install on my work box using a
SQL Server login. I did not try a Domain login.

(1) I upgraded to the current snapshot version. Are you using stable or
snapshot? If stable, you might want try switching to the snapshot.

(2) I downloaded the MSSQL JDBC drivers from the MSFT website. Did you do
that? Here is the URL:

Re: Problem trying to connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 box

John,

I have the latest STABLE version 3.3.0. I will try and get the latest snapshot version. Does anyone know when
3.4.0 version is coming out? I may wait for that.

Also, I did download the latest SQL Server drivers from the MS site.

Thanks again.

Ok, since my last post I installed Squirrel on my Linux laptop (It's gloomy here and this is better than
sitting in front of the teevee...) and confirmed it works against my MSSQL2008 dev install on my work box
using a SQL Server login. I did not try a Domain login.

(1) I upgraded to the current snapshot version. Are you using stable or snapshot? If stable, you might want
try switching to the snapshot.

(2) I downloaded the MSSQL JDBC drivers from the MSFT website. Did you do that? Here is the URL:

Within the next few weeks. The current snapshot is supposed to be the
last one before the release (unless some severe problem is found within
the next days).

Re: Problem trying to connect to SQL Server 2008 R2 box

Hi Melinda,

which JDBC driver do you use? Using the jtds driver http://jtds.sourceforge.net/  worked quite well for me for connecting to a  SQL 2005 database. I'll give it a try on a Linux Box at work tomorrow.

Take care

Hi John. Yes each SQL Server is setup to accept both Windows and SQL authentication (mixed mode). I am able to login from my SQL Server 2008 Client via the management studio to each of these boxes. I can confirm that Squirrel does work with MSSQL2008R2 from W7 x64 using SQL Server logins. I am not sure that Windows Domain logins work. Are you able to configure your server to accept SQL Server logins (Mixed mode)?
