How to reconnect user logon and / or cancel user/TSO session

The 3270 emulator / connection was lost, reconnected, but it went back
to the Turnkey logon screen.

Tried to logon, get 'logon in use'

Tried $C 'Herc01', get TSU 61 $HASP000 HERC01 NON-CANCELABLE

Re: How to reconnect user logon and / or cancel user/TSO session

Hi Mike,

Glad you are making progress.

To cancel a TSO user use the "C U=userid" command.

However, you may not have to cancel (in case you are concerned with losing some important data). When the TN3270 client loses it's TCP/IP connection, VTAM doesn't always see it (this is also a problem with the big iron systems that I use for work) and therefore TSO doesn't recognize the disconnection. To force VTAM (and thus TSO) to know about the disconnect, you can vary the terminal device offline and back online. For example, if the user was connected to 0C1 then -

V NET,ID=CUU0C1,INACT,I
(That final "I" is for immediate and is required).

Then issue a
V NET,ID=CUU0C1,ACT

This will ensure that VTAM and TSO know that the TSO user has disconnected. Then you can issue the command

"HERC01 RECONNECT" at the TN3270 logon screen and reconnect the disconnected TSO session. If you get an error saying that the user is already logged on then you guessed the wrong control unit id for the terminal device.  You do not have to reconnect on the same terminal control unit that the user originally logged onto. You can get disconnected from OC1 and reconnect on 0C0  etc. Unfortunately, I can't think of a command that will easily show you which terminal (VTAM LU name) a user is logge d onto.

Here's an extract from my console ...

Tony,

Thanks, I knew about the V NET commands, didn't know the RECONNECT
command though, will give that a try.

Also I was doing a $C '<userid>', which I guess is a JES2 command.

Is the C U=<userid>, an MVS command?

And I guess 'p <process>' is MVS, while '$p <job>' is JES2?

Gets confusing on what is consdiered a "job", and what is considered a
process / program (<insert proper MVS term here> :), Especially
when you have commands issued from the console that are acutally
starting JCL procedures that in turn start programs !

I'm a relative newbie to the mainframe world. I've only been an operator
for a little over a decade, first with OS/390 and now z/OS. I wasn't
familiar with the RECONNECT command either.

> Also I was doing a $C '<userid>', which I guess is a JES2 command.

The $ is the JES2 command prefix character.

> Is the C U=<userid>, an MVS command?

Yes.

> And I guess 'p <process>' is MVS, while '$p <job>' is JES2?

Yes. Although they are the same letters they're different commands. That
should probably be 'P <StartedTask>'. The MVS P command is the stoP
command. The JES $P command is the Purge command and in the case of a job
it would be used to purge a job's output after the job ended, not to stop a
running job:

> Gets confusing on what is consdiered a "job", and what is considered a

I think you're thinking of jobs versus started tasks. Jobs are submitted
via the TSO SUBMIT command or via some form of reader and the JCL in
question will have a JOB card. Started tasks are, well, started via the MVS
Start command and the JCL will be a PROC with no JOB card.

> Especially when you have commands issued from the console that are
> acutally starting JCL procedures that in turn start programs !

If it's started via the console(MVS) Start command it's a started task,
not a job. Both jobs and started tasks execute programs.

TK3 doesn't seem to recognize 'RECONNECT".

I tried both :

HERC01 RECONNECT

RECONNECT HERC01

RE: Re: How to reconnect user logon and / or cancel user/TSO session

Reconnect is an option on the logon command.
It has been many years since I had TK3 IPL'd, so take this with a grain of
salt.

When you are prompted for the password for HERC01 type the password followed
by RECON. Certainly that works if you have ACF2 in the system but that may
be ACF2 specific. (I worked on a MVS 3.8 system that had ACF2).

Try "LOGON APPLID(TSO)" at the "sleeping cat" screen(I am assuming TK3 "out
of the box" here).

When prompted for the USERID type "HERC01 RECONNECT".

Thanks !

Duh, and if I'd read the 'help logon', I would have seen the syntax :/
