Package management in MeeGo

Hello,

I would like to get some clarification about the package management
scheme in MeeGo:

* Why are Yum and Zypper both used? (at least in 1.0 that is)
* What are their roles?
* Would you think that upstream versions of both will be used in MeeGo
or will there be some new functionalities or additions?
* Will there be anything related to package management that's
exclusive to MeeGo only?

Re: Package management in MeeGo

Hi,

It seems that zypper works better as meego packages are generated by obs.......
It is merely my feeling.
wait for official answers.

Ah - well, zypper doesn't work quite as well as it could (yet) sadly.
That is because we use a rather old and crusty version of 'rpm' itself.
If we use the latest SUSE version - we get Recommends: and Suggests:
With those we can simplify package splitting and accelerate building. As
an example for the nautilus package:

Meego:	Requires: gvfs-gphoto2
SUSE:	Recommends: gvfs

That helps reduce build times, reduce the installation of un-necessary
packages, and (rather more importantly) allows distro updates to be done
pleasantly [zypper dup]. Recommends are rather useful to ensure a
consistent set of weak linkages, and a great way to ensure that packages
that are not (strictly) required are actually included and installed on
update[1]

	Anyhow ;-)

	HTH,

		Michael.

[1] - assuming I understood it all properly ;-)

because we wanted to give zypper a try, but also want to keep the solid
fallback yum in place.

they from the backend of packagekit; packagekit is the component that
abstracts the actual implementation
of the package downloader/installer from the rest of the system

I doubt that in the short term we'll do anything exciting meego
specific. I have some research ideas I'd like to get
done but that's somewhat more long term (if I can get resources, for 1.2)

Re: Package management in MeeGo

zypper seems to be a good choice.

Re: Package management in MeeGo

Hi,

Consider the consumers of MeeGo devices are probably not Linuxors as
us, they need more simple way to manage their softwares.
I think the ONE CLICK INSTALL from suse, which based on zypper & YaST
is more user friendly, thus more suitable for MeeGo.

Leaf

Re: Package management in MeeGo

agreed with leaf john. one click install is really an easy and user friendly way...and should be used in meego.

I have not investigated on SuSE's ONE CLICK INSTALL. Is it similiar to the following feature request?

all of this uses packagekit, and is independent of the actual low level
components used.
