Re: Datebk on iPhone now possible?

I just read the article...Thanks! I still do not hold out hope. The developer of DateBook has held firm and
fast that he will NOT develop for the iPhone or iPad under ANY circumstance. I'd love him to reconsider, I
ask every 6-12 months, but the answer has been a consistent NO.

Re: Datebk on iPhone now possible?

I have had the same response from him. There is a absolute no on developing
datebook for the iPhone or iPad. This is in a very large way due to Apple
restrictions.

Apple does not allow you to develop an application that competes with their
own and this includes their very crappy calendar.

I no longer use my palm although I still have it on my table and I recharge
the batteries when they get low but I am 99.9999999% on a iPhone now. The
only thing I look at my palm for is to look at what week of the year it is.

RE: Datebk on iPhone now possible?

Be sure to continue to enter important dates in your Palm because iPhone does not search back farther than
about a year. It will, at least, give you a good data base.

Datebk still does so many things so much easier than iPhone that I still try to keep it up to date and charged. I
also have an extra T/X in storage that I bought as a backup when I found out they were going to stop making Palm pdas.

I also miss the writing capabilities and the editable dictionary that completed words and phrases that I
had added. Also the ability to edit, copy and paste so easily.

As you can tell, I really miss using it full time.

I share your frustration that CESD feels he and Apple could never achieve a modus vivendi. Since I love my
iPad, but still miss DateBk, I too have written to him directly, asking him to reconsider his decision or to
work with an established Mac/iOS developer to port DateBk and Pimlical to those platforms.

It will truly be a shame if CESD sticks to his decision, both for those of us who have appreciated his software
designs, and for the good cause his work supports, which will miss the potential funding that could be
extracted from a universe of iOS users that is far larger than the Palm platform ever achieved.

However, your allegation that Apple always prohibits development of apps that compete with their own is
mistaken. A quick visit to the App Store will reveal numerous competitors to Apple's default camera and
music player apps, for example. As for apps with different kinds of calendar functions, a simple search on
the term "calendar" results in 3,188 hits for the iPhone and 991 for the iPad. Many of these aren't relevant
to what we'd want, but plenty are. Indeed, members of this mailing list have often discussed such apps as
Pocket Informant here. PI is aimed at the same uses as DateBk and is undeniably a direct (and superior)
competitor to Apple's Calendar app. That's why I'm convinced that there's no insurmountable reason
there couldn't be an iOS version of DateBk.

Although I don't use the app, I hope they succeed. It would be interesting to know more about what the issues are.

Whatever the problems, it hasn't kept them from reaching version 2.02 in their iPhone version and 1.68 in
their iPad version. Nor has it prevented the app from being, to quote their own copy, "#4 in sales for all
mobile apps for several years running." If competition were really the root issue on Apple's side, I don't
think that could have happened.

RE: Datebk on iPhone now possible?

I agree, it isn't about competition, it's about the architecture
restrictions of the Apple devices and the parameters that Apple sets for
their own OS that create conflicts. The newest update, OS 5, has caused
some issues so far.

even though I now have Android mobile, and, Android tablet, I still use
Palm, primarily for DateBk

email I mainly use Android, though, server searching on Snapper is still
NOT available on Android (I think ?)

out of curiousness, I installed PI (as it was available on Amazon) (but
haven't really looked beyond covers as yet)

Re: Datebk on iPhone now possible?

I agree that the omission of Pimlical for the iPhone is an EPIC mistake, but we need to get our facts straight.
One of the factors against making Pimlical for the iPhone is that Apple does NOT inform developers ahead of
time whether the new program will be accepted by the App Store. Therefore, there is a risk that multiple
years of developing Pimlical for the iPhone could go down the drain *after* spending so much time working
on it.

Pimlical for the iPhone. . . the idea that just won't go away. . .

Best,

I switched to iPhone after long years of Palm&dateBook.

That:

can´t be quite true.
Just have a look a the appstore and try to count the large number of calendar apps.

After I tried a lot of them - ourgh awfull ones - I´m using "weekcalendar".
It´s not dateBook but its quite good!!

Re: Datebk on iPhone now possible?

I would second the vote for Week Calendar on iPhone. It is only $1.99. It does everything that I used to do on
Datebk6, and in some ways better. It has templates, custom colors, icons, and many other features. I did
not use the todos or contact management of Datebk6. The more integrated PIM for iPhone is Pocket
Informant. But Pocket Informant calendar in some ways is not as good as Week Calendar. No, Week Calendar
does some things better than Datebk6, because it can sync directly with Google Calendar, allowing me to
monitor many calendars at once, and easily customize my views. This is no weakness of Datebk6 in the sense
that in it's day, Datebk6 was stuck with Palm OS which did not have the cloud based capabilities we now have.
I was using Datebk6 on the Palm Pre with the emulator until a calendar came along for iOS that would meet my
needs. The most important thing for me is the templates, and once Week Calendar came out with that, I made
the switch to iPhone. iPhone is truly terrific, I have to say. Week Calendar finally gets me back to where I
need to be from a scheduling and business standpoint.

Do you have the steps to get datebk6 working on the classic emulator?

I have tried getting it working on the pre1 but didn't succeed.
It would mean i have a use for my old pre1

Re: Re: Datebk on iPhone now possible?

Week Calendar uses the standard CalDev calendar that the built-in iPhone calendar uses. Syncing with
Outlook or Google Calendar is the same as using the default iPhone calendar program. Week Calendar is just
a different user interface to the same underlying database (and uses more features of that database than
the built-in apps).

If you are not on Android and using Pilmical, Week Calendar is the best I've seen on an iPhone.
