I'm not sure if this is the direction you want or expect:

http://www.keyghost.com/qido/

Pricey at $90 - and I seem to recall an appalling shipping charge on
top of that. I've been thinking about it for quite a while, haven't
purchased it yet. I really like the idea ... but I've wondered if
someone with an Arduino couldn't produce something better (ie. default
Qwerty to Dvorak, but with the ability to remap any keys the user
wanted). I don't know enough about Arduinos to know if the idea is
practical, but I think so ...

Thanks! That was exactly what I was looking for!
I like the creators quote here (as a Dvorak user I get this all the time!)
"* Sitting down at a QWERTY keyboard. People make fun of us when we can’t use their keyboard, but honestly, it’s really annoying. I’d like to have dvorak with me all the time.
"

You are right about it being a bit pricey. And the shipping is $29!? I don't know how that's even possible. The device is size of (and probably the weight of) a pack of gum (back when gum came in 5stick packs :-).

Arduino might work. That is a good idea. I have a couple of them so I'll give that a shot.

Cheers
B
