[EE] recommendation for simplest LCD display/driver pair?

Just getting back into playing with LCDs. I initially want 2.5 x 7-seg digits to display up to "199".

Looking around, I may have to get a controller IC that supports larger displays, but the price is low enough
for messing about with.

However, do 2.5 digit controllers exist, or do I need to get at least a 3 digit one?

Also, anyone have favourite display/driver combinations for simple experimentation?

Thanks & regards,
Matt

If you find a suitable glass Microchip have some 16F series devices with LCD segment drive capability that
should be ideal for this use.

You may already be aware of this, but the HD44780 type displays are super
popular and easy to use. Your grandma's toaster can drive these display
modules.
