Next Step

Hey guys, how's it going? noticed that juno is a bit stalled in development and
while i'm no php expert, i was wondering in what can i help out in. i noticed
that a few files are missing and the regiserrow.inc is a hard coded file... any
pointers (possibly another module) where i can copy the concept and modify the
code so it works?

Cheers,

Rodolfo

Re: Next Step

I have been swamped lately.

The files that exist are all that have been done so far. The idea is to have
three major areas:

*  Accounts (Add, Delete, Edit)
* Account Register (Add, Delete, Edit)
* Bill Remind (Add, Delete, Edit)

I am going to be working on this heavily over the next couple weeks myself.
Where would you like to start?

Re: Next Step

Scott,

You would so be my hero if you could get this thing to a working state. Just
account management and register maintenance would be an awesome start.
Reporting after that would be a sweet thing too.
I'm so excited to have this thing working!

:-) I would be my hero as well. I can't keep a paper register to save my life.
I figure if I have the Check Register at my disposal anytime I check my email,
I might actually use the thing.

Re: Next Step

How is the Juno project progressing since the last set of emails?

I'd really like to start contributing to this project any way I can. I'm
concerned that the CVS might be out of sync though. Has anyone been able to make
any progress as of late?

Thanks!

I have been working a little bit on juno, but I do not have enough
'spare' time to really start off the project (almost from zero).
Right now, I feel I could contribute more if there was already a
working code base :( IMHO, there is some more designing work to do
before coding more: database scheme, the sql driver. Someone with basic
programming accounting skill might be useful too :) Gnucash.org has
some designing documents that might be interesting for us.

have a nice day,

Re: Next Step

While I am a fan of the double entry accounting system, I think we need to ask
the question "who is the target user of this package?" If it is business, then
double entry is the way to go. The detail you get from that is great.

However, if the target is your general lazy home user who wants a web-based
"quicken/MS Money-type" replacement package... I don't think they will want to
do double entry. Double entry has a lot of positives, but it's time consuming.
(Not to mention that not many people have either had accounting
experience/classes, or remember that stuff.)

I just think that double entry will remove a lot of users from the mix.

Thoughts?

Re: Next Step

The double entry implementation I am talking about is GNUCash. It takes care of
all the double entry stuff.

We can provide a default set of accounts to make it easier. The nice thing
about this is, we can choose which level it is by the accounts that are in the
system. Instead of dumbing the whole system down for one group or the other.

I know nothing about accounting theory, but it seems like this would have a
tough time accounting for income (anything outside of a closed system)...
any quick links/explanations?

The best place is gnucash.org. They have a very good Double Entry accounting
explanation on there site.

I have been around accounting for several years. I just suck at doing it on
paper. ;-)

Re: Next Step

The basic idea has been fleshed out in the Archive of the Juno lists.

The method for which I am going to implement the Accounting side is via Double
Entry accounting. For each entry in an Account, an opposite entry will be made
in a different account.

I can handle the accounting functions, just been a little short on the excess
time, myself.

So the sum of all the entries should always be zero. Example, when you are
payed every two weeks, what entries would you enter and in which accounts ?

Maybe, there should be a set of default accounts created.

Re: Next Step

Yes, a set of default accounts is a must.

For example:

My accounts are:

+ Bank
   - Amsouth
+ Income
   - My Company.com

My transaction with the system would be the following:

Enter into Bank:Amsouth, $200.00.
Deduct from Income:My Company.com, $200.00.

Re: Next Step

I am not sure if Alarms from another system would be good. My idea about the
billing reminder is that it would check and optionally add to the register, or
create a new single instance of itself once the day passes.

I am not sure if this is a valid NAG feature or not. We will see.

If you would like, you can look at the accounts. We can go from there.
