Thanks, Gilles. Those machines are below the specs of this machine. I
wonder what the problem could be.

Hello,

Just a thought, where is the users home directory?  The thumbnails directory is (usually)  in $HOME/.thumbnails.  Is this directory stored on a network drive?

/home/user/.thumbnails is on a local IDE drive. But
/home/user/pictures/digikam is on a different partition on the same
drive. Might that be a problem? Note that / is on yet another
partition.

I always put / and /home on separate partitions. On this box, with
it's 500GB hard drive, I have an additional few partitions, namely
~/pictures, ~/music, ~/video. I did this so that I could easily backup
what I need.

no, using local another partition is not a problem. All my computer use a dedicaced partition to host pictures. It's mounted in /mnt/photos
