Awesome Pairs

Hi!
So as we discussed last week, Pairs is in KDE Edu now. Good!

I'm sending this e-mail, though, to bring to you the work that Marco
and Abhash have done to make Pairs look really really cool.
Since I don't feel like describing it, here you have a screenshot.

Nice work guys!!

Re: Awesome Pairs

Thanks Aleix,

now that Pairs looks good, we would need some volunteers to make some
themes.
I will try to make and editor for it but would be cool if someone
started already doing some themes.

Cheers
Marco

Hi,

Is there a doc (preferably on a KDE wiki) indicating what a Pairs theme
consists of? and what is the naming of elements?

Also, isn't there a confusion about "Pairs theme"? I thought Pairs theme
was a pair game theme (images, sounds, text,..) in order to play the
game. What you're naming here as a Pair Theme is a background + buttons
graphical interface theme. I think you should differentiate the 2,
unless I did not understand correctly.

Re: Awesome Pairs

Hi, I tried to build and run Pairs, I intend to try creating a theme.
I got this errors when running http://pastebin.com/UcNVU0aG
It seems that PlayerModel::random?Icon tries to select a random icon from a
list but the list is empty so it crashes, I am thinking that I am missing
some resources? Can someone give me some help installing it properly?

neat :) cool to see more apps for younger people!

i just had to try it out. it seems like the sort of thing that could be really
nice on a touch device. however, there are some issues that hold it back from
being usable in such a way (reliance on mouse hover, animation timings, ...)

if there is interest in making Pairs ready for use on tablets (and i'd love to
offer it on our upcoming Plasma Active tablets!), let me know and i'd be happy
to offer some observatoins on what does and does not work so well on the
device.

Hi Aaron,
I'm interested in Pairs working on PA, I actually made some changes
already back in the PA3 sprint to make it work. I had to compile the
application locally in the tablet back then, so the whole process was
a bit rusty. :P

they are mostly design principles, so i'm not sure if they would work well
into individual bug reports just yet. here are the things i noticed:

* it relies on mouse hover in certain places. for instance, to remove a player
you need to hover the item and then hit the "X". this works really nicely with
a mouse, but not with a touch screen where hover events just don't exist for
practical reasons.

* animation timing. the animation that starts the layout of the board is
reallllly slllloooooow. in practice, very few transition animations should be
longer than .5s, and most should be more on the order of 1/4 to 1/3s. this
gives the application a much nicer user experience. don't worry that people
won't notice the wonderful animations if they are shorter.. our eyes are
amazing. unfortunately our patience is short. :)

* hit areas should be bigger rather than smaller. on the game board, you have
to touch the actual filled area of a piece. for pieces that are just outlines
(such as in animal logic), this is hard even with a mouse. the hit area should
be the entire space around the item to make it easily fingerable.

* scalable UI. the graphics must always fit inside the window. the "New game"
button will at times appear outside the window if it is not big enough. on
devices where it will run full screen at native resolution, there is no answer
to this other than "fit everything in the window, or make it scrollable". in
this case, making it fit in the window is probably prefered (the new game
button could perhaps appear on the left outside the playing area, where it

Re: Awesome Pairs

Hi Aaron,
As I promised, I took some time to address these issues, maybe you'd
like to try it on a Vivaldi and see if it helped.

I couldn't test it yet from a touch screen. I'll try it on the exopc
at some point, but some of the constraints you observed won't apply
there either (like screen size), so feedback is still welcome.

Fixed, although I'm not very happy with the solution. Might change in
the future, but now it's possible to remove a player from a touch
screen.

yes, this now works .. i found it slightly odd that you could select multiple
users at once by pressing on them .. for some reason i expected to only be
able to select one at a time, with only one having a close mark on it. small
detial though, it at least works now with touch :)

Hi Aaron,
I'm interested in Pairs working on PA, I actually made some changes
already back in the PA3 sprint to make it work. I had to compile the
application locally in the tablet back then, so the whole process was
a bit rusty. :P

neat :) cool to see more apps for younger people!

i just had to try it out. it seems like the sort of thing that could be really
nice on a touch device. however, there are some issues that hold it back from
being usable in such a way (reliance on mouse hover, animation timings, ...)

if there is interest in making Pairs ready for use on tablets (and i'd love to
offer it on our upcoming Plasma Active tablets!), let me know and i'd be happy
to offer some observatoins on what does and does not work so well on the
device.

Re: Awesome Pairs

Hi,

Saw this blog post :
http://www.proli.net/2012/05/25/pairs-is-finally-in-kde-edu/ - and
thought of giving my feedback on the UI design.

Some issues, for me at least, that i found were:

*Players' panel should include the "join" panel, since they're correlated.

*A delete icon with no text is confusing, specially if it means to quit
the application.

*It's not intuitive to get back to the previous menu/screen when you
press the Info button.

*There should be some kind of visual clue in the "game panel", that
showed that the last row is a subgroup of the first row. Otherwise it
appears that each icon is a different type of game.

*The gameplay for multi-player seems nonsensical if it's meant to be
played on the same computer/device. A better way to do it would be to
let each player finish the entire game and then a chronometer would
count the amount of time each player took and the one with lesser time
would win.

*Perhaps changing the background to something more colorful would be better.

*There should be a way to pause the game while it's running.

The alternation is silly and doesn't make sense, because when one fails
the time starts automatically counting for the next player and it's not
fair play. If you want a better multi-player you'll need network (or
some other type of connection) and 2 or more devices.

Maybe, but a lot of nesting is not that helpful either.

Hi Andreas,

thank you for the Icons but why do you say they are missing?
The "info" and "new game" icon are already there. For the "exit" icon we
already have a moc, like I said in another email, it didn't make the
game before the beta tagging
But it will come.
For the delete user wee also have the same you did (almost exactly) but
I didn't put it becaues would be too little for the overlay.
Plus now the deletion is also under discussion so it could change
everything.

I really appreciate your interest, and if you want, I will start
developing another game soon if you want to contribute to the graphic
aspect of it would be great.

Thanks

Hi Andreas,

it was a "long" time ago and I do not know if you remember me. So I
answer this email hoping you can help us.
We need your help with the Icons from Pairs and the Pairs Editor.
In particular we need two new Icons of Pairs on the same style and to
correct an existing one.
For the Editor that is a new application we still need to decide how
exactly to do but If you wish I will tell you as soon we decide

Thanks

Yea, that's like asking "How are you" when you pass by someone you know.
It's politically correct but in reality you don't give a sh*t. I'm
starting to think it was a big waste of my time.

Re: Awesome Pairs

Hi,

But also some of its suggestion we already tried and decided they were
no go. Plus the kids in the kindergarten are also playing other kde
games like Blinken and Ktuberling.
For these games the kids has to wait till the player is finished and
they do not have the patience to wait.

Anyway IMHO he was the one that couldn't really listen, and probably
didn't really care since he didn't even bother to write his name.

But anyway his suggestion is given let's do the best of it?

Cheers
Marco

Yes, I would click on it to stop the current game.

Yes, I had trouble finding out a click would get me out

I agree. We have the right pane full of icons and it's not that evident
the 6 firsts are for choosing the type of game while the rest are for
