kde & xacpim

Is anyone out there using xacpim with kde?  It's supposed to display battery
and temperature information "in the root window", which I take to mean the
background.  (see http://shapeshifter.se/code/xacpim/)
I don't get anything, using either the suggested arguments or 
xacpim -g +1+1 -f 6x12  -cs black -t
with or without a picture in the background, or even setting it as a
background program.  Nothing appears at all.
I'm using KDE 3.5.3 under fbsd 6.1.
Any ideas how to get this to work?
