As far as I know, google groups is a frontend to Usenet.  You don't
create groups at google groups, you create one in a news server
somewhere and it will hopefully get indexed by Google.

Please somebody correct me if I am wrong.

You're wrong. You can easily create "Google Groups" which appear @ 
groups.google.com as if they were true usenet newsgroups.
