I upgraded to Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy Heron this morning, updated my Fortress
checkout to r1541, and then ran "./ant clean test" and . . . 

. . . it all worked fine.

So whatever the problem was in the JVM that caused that Fortress test to
fail has gone away in 1.6.0_06-b02.

r1542 also seems to work fine (./ant clean test) using the 
recently-released Java 1.6.0_05 for OS X.
