what are good starter tasks for getting involved with ghc dev?

Hey All, 
I'm interested in getting involved in (/ helping out )  with  dev work on GHC,
what are good ways to get started on tackling smaller bits in the near term? (better to do simple things before more ambitious things after all!)

should  i just go through the issue tracker for tasks or bugs that are un assigned that I think i can do, and see if I can do them?
