OK, I'm a bit confused now. Is this coming from the pdx.rb google
group or is this the old list revived? If it's that latter, is the
google group essentially dead?

After the lists.pdxruby.org mailinglists were fixed then the
groups.google.com list was created. This mail message is from the
lists.pdxruby.org server.

Re: Is the list working now?

Do you guys think forwarding all incoming mail to the new google group
will be helpful, I can also set up a redirect on the lists.pdxruby.org
site to the new group. Should be pretty self evident of what the deal
is. Also, does google have any way to import the old newgroup database
as far as archived messages or do we care?

No, I don't think we should forward: that would cause too much
confusion for people who are not on the one or the other list and
could cause some ugly problems on the servers themselves (I'm not even
sure how the forward would work given that both lists only accept mail
from subscribers -- what happens when someone isn't subscribed to
one?).

As for the archives, the list is currently archived by gmane. I am
hoping to get the google group pointed to the same in the near future,
but I suspect that's going to take a lot of effort given that I don't
know who originally got us set up over there (Robby?).

The old list is still running, but we are trying to get everyone using
the new list. It seemed logical to keep them both up and running for a
short period of time so that we could make sure everyone on the old
list knew about the new one. We will need to adjust the pointers on
the current site (need to get someone with access to the login to do
this) and then probably make this list read only for some period of
time before shutting it down completely.

Ack! I've been trying for months to join this list and finally it works today.... and the first
emails I get are about how this list is no more! :-o

Ok, so I've joined the pdx.rb google group... that's the place now, right?

Well, there's one of the reasons we've moved it. ;~)

Funny: now I'm getting all the mailman confirmation emails from my previous attempts to join the
list.... I've never liked mailman... nice to let google deal with it!

Re: Is the list working now?

I suggest sending an email out to the old list, saying it is being
killed effective today, with a link to the new list..and signup
information (how to for non gmail users).

Then just shut it off. Update the website and point it to the new
list.. and the old archives if need be.

I don't see a point in keeping the old list running at this point. It
was dead for months anyway.

That's already been done, but I'll resend it shortly.

Yes, agreed. Done. At least as far as shutting down this list.

Re: Is the list working now?

Just to add to the confusion, it looks like a lot of backlogged email
is getting sent out now. Not sure why this is happening. I hope it
doesn't cause too much confusion.

Thanks again for getting the list back up and running. I wonder,
though, if there's any possibility of getting the incoming messages to
the list run through SpamAssassin before they hit the moderation
queue, as was happening with the prior incarnation?

I only ask because, as one of the list moderators, I'm currently
getting 40-60 "message awaiting moderation" notices for spam that hits
the public list address, even though we have filtering enabled that
drops messages with high SA scores.

Thanks,

Lennon

Re: Is the list working now?

Lennon,
Yeah I can set up SpamAssassin, shouldn't too much of an issue. I
wonder if there is a way to whitelist all registered subscribers right
off the top.

Re: Is the list working now?

Yes, with Mailman, there's definitely a way. Spam emails shouldn't be
able to get to the list at all.

That's never really been an issue -- the 'drop' rule is set at a
pretty ridiculously high SA score (like 12 or something), and I don't
know that much of anything written by a human and sent from a valid
source address could ever hit that point.

Plus, whitelisting just exposes you to From-address spoofing.

But no professional spammer is going to go through the trouble of
discovering a From address to use on a small mailing list like this one.
It's just not worth the trouble.

-Moxley

Josh Martin | 7 Jun 19:19

Re: Is the list working now?

I agree, but we should be able to just drop SA in to start with then
work on any additional rules as needed. SA usually does a pretty good
job w/o explicit white lists, but lets cross that road when we get
there. Just a thought.

Re: Is the list working now?

Oops-
BTW This is a new install and is not on the old host. We just migrated
all the old data over so we are missing SA and/or clamav, stuff like
that at the moment. Although its debian and exim so it should be no
issue to drop in and get running.
