[PDX.rb] Website for Shift et al.

At the last monthly meeting, we briefly discussed developing a website
for Shift (to bikes) (http://www.shift2bikes.org/index.shtml) and the
Bus Project (http://www.busproject.org/). The general consensus was that
the Bus Project might not need our services. There seemed to be a fair
amount of interest in development for Shift. This post is attempting to
start that discussion back up. As I for one, would love for pdx.rb to
hack something together for Shift. This will also start to address Ben's
statement that it is important for us (as a group) to produce code.

Thoughts?

Information?

Discussion?

Other (awesome local) organizations that need websites?

As a progressive and cyclist I'd love to do some work for either. Preston _______________________________________________ PDXRuby mailing list PDXRuby <at> lists.pdxruby.org IRC: #pdx.rb on irc.freenode.net http://lists.pdxruby.org/mailman/listinfo/pdxruby

It sounded like FreeGeek had an itch that could be scratched. The confusion with the room booking for this past meeting caused one of the FG people to mention that they didn't really have a good booking system. FreeGeek has treated us really well and it'd be cool to give something back. A room reservation system would not be hard to implement, particularly if it was FG-specific and we didn't have to worry about pesky generality ;) I have a plot related to this. Stayed tuned for more details, or email me off-list if you really just gotta know right now ;) Ben _______________________________________________ PDXRuby mailing list PDXRuby <at> lists.pdxruby.org IRC: #pdx.rb on irc.freenode.net http://lists.pdxruby.org/mailman/listinfo/pdxruby

Perhaps some sort of generic CMS is needed that we can re-use for different purposes like this? (with event planning and all that fun stuff that most groups/.ORGs need) I think Jeremy Kemper even had an idea about Personal Telco. Perhaps he can share his thoughts on that... ;-) -Robby -- -- /****************************************************** * Robby Russell, Owner.Developer.Geek * PLANET ARGON, Open Source Solutions & Web Hosting * Portland, Oregon | p: 503.351.4730 | f: 815.642.4068 * www.planetargon.com | www.robbyonrails.com * Programming Rails | www.programmingrails.com *******************************************************/ _______________________________________________ PDXRuby mailing list PDXRuby <at> lists.pdxruby.org IRC: #pdx.rb on irc.freenode.net http://lists.pdxruby.org/mailman/listinfo/pdxruby

I will be working on a ruby shift project this weekend. Low tech high impact for the current people involved with the bikebulletin. It is based on some private emails going back and forth. Fairly specific, well defined. Not a CMS. Shift bikebulletin/calendar spike Urban Grind eastside (NE 22nd and Oregon St) maybe earlier, maybe later but definitely from 9am to noon both days. Caveat, I don't have a laptop. ...so I hope someone else shows up who does. :-) This will have a huge impact. Aaron NB sorry about the late notice, unable to make plans farther in advance at the moment. _______________________________________________ PDXRuby mailing list PDXRuby <at> lists.pdxruby.org IRC: #pdx.rb on irc.freenode.net http://lists.pdxruby.org/mailman/listinfo/pdxruby

Re: [PDX.rb] Website for Shift et al.

If I wasn't out of town I would come help. I do alot of Shifty events
and can't think of many things more fun then mixing ROR and Bikes,
well ROR and Bikes and Beer but you get the point.

I'm actually working on the ghostcycle website for Portland. It's an
ROR site hosted at PlanetArgon. Perhaps you all have seen the white
bikes around town?

http://www.ghostcyclepdx.org

Let me know if there are other ROR/Shift events going on.

Cheers-
Michael

I think this would be a great idea.  We should ask Martin or Richard there are FG about this (Martin, are you out there?)

I have a plot related to this.  Stayed tuned for more details, or email

A 'plot' as in you're rubbing your hands together and muttering 'Excellent!"?

Re: [PDX.rb] Website for Shift et al.

I'm up for donating work to any Portland-based, worker-owned company
or cool non-profit. Shift sounds great. I love what these guys do:

http://www.eggplant.coop/

Doing work for good causes would be rewarding, and it would create
good PR for the group. I'm in, and others working with my web design
company (http://localorbit.net/) are in as well. We'd be happy to
contribute graphic design and CSS layout work.

Re: [PDX.rb] Website for Shift et al.

As an sometimes-active "shiftie" myself, I agree that it would be
great to help out Shift. I do wonder if perhaps other organizations
might be more in need of a website "makeover", though -- Shift may
spin their wheels a fair bit with content and calendar updates, but
the basic look and functionality of the site isn't too far removed
from what they seems to want/need.

The website for the Bicicyle Transportation Alliance
(www.bta4bikes.org), on the other hand, is very much in need of a
makeover. The current design and functionality are very pre-dot-com
bubble: ugly, functional, and (from all appearances) completely
statically maintained.

Any other nominations?

You're going to find it rough going with the BTA, unfortunately. I have volunteered to do work for them over the years and they've never allowed me to do an overhaul on the site. The site is on someone's Macintosh and is uploaded via FTP to the server. About 3 years ago I offered to donate an extra PC, set it up with Linux and CVS so they could start to get cyclists with programming skills going on developing a new site (in PHP at the time) that would be database driven and allow them to do some content management. As it is everything is manual. Every single page is simple HTML generated by Dreamweaver. No SSI or anything. It's a mess, frankly. Not only does it look bad, but the code is absolutely atrocious. I came in and did what they'd let me do, but they said kindly that they'd prefer to wait on the overhaul because they were looking on going with one of these non-profit companies that do site design, etc. Well, it doesn't appear that that ever panned out, because the site is exactly the same. Anyway, point is, that I was very diplomatic. Very friendly. I have a good relationship with the BTA. I offered hardware and time and still they wanted to pay an outside shop to come in and redo the site and it never got done. So if someone can crack that nut, that would be a worthy cause, but it's going to take more than technical accumen. It's going to take someone who can show them there's a better way of getting things done and actually convince them that it would be a good idea for them to move on that.
