Publish hanging - grid on screen - can't do anything

Hello,

I have the same problem mentioned in this earlier article:

	http://forums.squeakland.org/viewtopic.php?t=103&highlight=publish

Publish hangs and then we are left with a world where there is a grid
and you basically can't do anything except bring up the world menu.
You can't click in any of the tabs. Nothing. You can save the project
but when you read it back in again you are where you are before. You
still can't do anything. I have a handful of students with projects
that they worked on for two hours and now they can't continue with
these projects. Help!

  Thanks.

Re: Publish hanging - grid on screen - can't do anything

Herb,

I think your image is fixed (I did not need the changes file). I don't know
what happened during your "save project", but I vagueally remmbered Ned Konz
saying that publishing creates a temporary copy displayed with grid
background. If it fails, you get stuck on the "grid copy". You need to get
"Back" to your "original project"

You can bring the world menu by clicking:
r-click on canvas, select white menu from halo
on the "world menu" click "show shared flaps"
this allows you to select "Navigator=>Prev"

Then similar to above, bring up "World Menu" from "world menu" by selecting
"desktop menu". You should be able to Save and your project seems fine. The
car runs :)

There did not see to be anything obviously wrong with image, I was able to
"save project" (is that what you were trying to do?).

I did put the changed image on

RE: Publish hanging - grid on screen - can't do anyt hing

 Hi,
Opening two windows for project's name (two clics on publish) may hang
And any error message may hang. and you cannot see the error message
since when saving a project you are in a new project with exactly the same
window.

You can stop squeak using command- dot /click or alt- dot /click depending
mac os or window.

Then get world menu and go to previous project. You are back in your
project. Correct errors or close some things and try again

Regards

You can get to the world menu by hitting the ESC key.

And please, please use the store log button and send us the SqueakDebug
log file!

Re: Publish hanging - grid on screen - can't do anything

Herb,

I had a very similar problem in the past. Ned Konz discovered the problem was
me having a "Change Sorter" open somewhere in the image. Could you look and
if you do have it, close it, Save/Quit/ReOpen Squeak, and try publish again.

Having said that, two notes:

First, I would suggest update to the latest 3.7 as Ned fixed the problem (but
to upgrade you probably want to publish/reimport your projects which make
this a circular problem)

Second, I have a feeling I saw a similar situation with "Nebraska Server" open
but cannot remember, so you may want to check and close any of them as well.

Hope this help, let me know

Milan

(there is a discussion on the list around mid-summer, look for "Change Sorter"
I can help locate it)
