Can't expand quickbook template?

Trying to expand the following template:

[template equation[name]
[$../equations/[name].svg]
]

results in the ] after "name" being interpreted as the closing brace to the 
[$, and [name] doesn't get expanded to the template argument.  Is this 
intentional behaviour or a bug?
