Preview and 'Save as PDF' items dimmed in print dialog in Preview

System 10.4.6
Preview 3.0.4 (398)

Is there any reason why one PDF document should have the Preview
and 'Save as PDF' items available, but another one have them
disabled? 'Save as PS' is not disabled, but when I try to open the
PS file it creates, it says it can't be converted to PDF. The file
I'm trying to print was downloaded from a journal archive (Brain,
Behavior, and Autoimmunity journal, from ScienceDirect), so it may be
protected in some way, although I would think that would disallow me
from printing at all, and/or saving it as *anything*, not just some
formats. I have tried restarting Preview, but not restarting the
entire Mac, nor redownlodin the file.

the latter is a "view-only" PDF

Then why does it allow me to print the thing? (a bug in OSX printing
architecture?)

I think both came from ScienceDirect too - I just re-downloaded
it, and it did the same thing - but other articles from the same
journal, and even the *same issue* weren't so protected..

"view only" may have been a slightly wrong name; i don't know all
the different PDF security flags' names, but i'm sure that's why
you see the behavior; the idea is that if one could save as PDF
through the print dialog, one could in effect alter the PDF;
Apple prevents that so that the security flag is not violated; in
an earlier version of Mac OS X, Apple didn't obey that flag, so
one was able to create a PDF "copy" that had the security
stripped out

Yes, some PDFs are 'locked'. Some PDFs are locked in different ways.
