Leopard reading HFS zip disks?

Hi everyone,

I have a friend who has a lot of old data on HFS formatted Zip disks
(from an ancient machine running System 7), and has recently gotten a
new iMac running Leopard. Before I tell her to get a USB zip off of
ebay, can someone confirm that 10.5.x can still read old HFS (not HFS
+) disks? I've tried googling, but can't find a definitive answer.

Thanks!

Leopard's Disk Utility can still format volumes as plain old HFS
(aka "Mac OS Standard"), so i would think it can read them too

Thanks, I didn't think to look there. I'd say you're probably right.

However, that is no guarantee that OS X will be able to see the Zip
drive or the disk in it.

True, but I remember having a USB ZIP working with 10.0 or 10.1, so
I'm hoping that will still be the case.

USB Zip drives work fine under Leopard and require no drivers. I
tested this the other day with a USB Zip 100 drive. Just plug and play.

Re: Leopard reading HFS zip disks?

Anecdotally, I was amazed when I attached a SCSI Zip drive to my NeXT
Dimension Cube (the zip stuff being released long after NeXT ceased to
build hardware), and it worked with no drivers. I continue to use that
configuration...

Almost identical situation, but with NeXT-formatted Zip disks.
Any hope there?

Re: Leopard reading HFS zip disks?

If I can find a USB zip drive I'll try it with my own NeXT formatted
zip discs. The only zip drives I have are scsi and I have no macs with
scsi anymore.

Re: Leopard reading HFS zip disks?

Just to let everyone know, a USB Zip 250 had no problem with mounting
System 7 era HFS formatted disks under Leopard, and my friend got her
data back.

Thanks for all the replies,

Re: Leopard reading HFS zip disks?

We have a USB Zip drive and when I insert a Next-formatted Zip disc
into it, Leopard asks me to either initialize the disc or eject it. :-
( Dunno what formatting Next used for their filesystem.

NextStep used a variant of UFS.

Hmm.. I though NeXT used UFS.
