maxima vs. Macsyma

I have the  purchased version 2.2 of Macsyma around just
prior to 1999 and was most unhappy to receive the bad news that they went
out of business. NOw my question how similar is this Maxima - can it do
all the things that Macsyma did and perhaps fixed some of the bugs ? Will
it clash with my current purchased version like just prior to 1999 ? as I am currently using it quite often
or can it just  add to it or what?

Why don't you simply try and install (wx)maxima and see by yourself? It's free! ;-)

Not all. Possibly it will do all the same things for your examples, though.

Perhaps. It may have some bugs that Macsyma commercial development fixed.

It should co-exist happily with the commercial system on the same computer.

New packages written for Maxima may very well work in Macsyma also.

As I understand the history of both projects, Maxima and Macsyma
diverged in the early 1980's, as Macsyma was developed commerically
and Maxima academically. At this point Macsyma and Maxima probably
have disjoint sets of features and bugs. I wouldn't expect, without
testing, that every Macsyma program works the same in Maxima, and
vice versa.

Hope this helps,
