format of list archive files

I have just joined this list and I would like to download the archive files
so I can search them before posting. The problem I have is that these files
are of a strange format unlike other lists that I have used. Most files are
of a form that is recognized by Thunderbird and other clients. The files for
this list seem to be a strange binary format that I am not able to use. Does
anyone know what kind of program can read these files and why they aren't the
typical form as in most other lists?

Hi Damon,

The archives I see at http://ghostscript.com/pipermail/gs-devel/ are compressed mbox files.  You should be able to uncompress them with gunzip or similar, then load the uncompressed files into your mail client.  The compression is to speed up the download.

Hope this helps,

------Scott.

That is what I expected from these files. I have done this several times
with other lists. The problem is that after I do gzip -d to one of these
files, I still have a binary file that isn't recognized by the e-mail client.
After a little experimenting this weekend, I discovered that for some strange
reason, these files are compressed twice. I found that if I do gzip -d
and then gzip -d again on the result of the first one, then I have a normal
file. Why would they be zipped twice? I have never seen this on any other
list and it isn't made obvious at
http://ghostscript.com/pipermail/gs-devel/

Oh well, I have finally extracted the last 12 years so I can search.

Thanks for your answer.

(my mail client lost your response, so pasting it in below, sorry about that).

You are right Damon, I didn't realize that because my file compression GUI automatically double-gunzipped it. That is indeed strange. ------Scott.
