Regd. MSU Update Installation for MS13-004

Hi Vivek/All,

It would be great if you could help me out in below scenario

We have observed that the if we extract update MS13-004_Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu it has three KBs internally.
KB976768 - contains files: webengine.dll, system.web.dll, aspnet_wp.exe
KB980842 - contains files: system.dll
KB2756919 - contains files: system.runtime.serialization.dll, system.servicemodel.dll,
system.identitymodel.dll, smdiagnostics.dll, servicemonikersupport.dll

version.

So if MS13-004_Windows6.0-KB2742601-x64.msu is already installed on the system and after that
MS13-004_Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu is installed, then internally, Microsoft does not install
KB980842 as the file is already at a higher version

On installing the update MS13-004_Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu through command line using
004_Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu the update fails with exit code 1 while on installing it manually it
installs fine.

It would be great if you could help me out in this regards and also help me in understanding update
installation behavior.

Thanks a lot in advance

Thanks,

Regards,
Rajat Singhal

RE:Regd. MSU Update Installation for MS13-004

Hi Rajat,

The following behavior is expected and there should not be a concern here:

                >>>> So if MS13-004_Windows6.0-KB2742601-x64.msu is already installed on the system and after that MS13-004_Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu is installed, then internally, Microsoft does not install KB980842 as the file is already at a higher version

Basically, we have some minimum pre-reqs (KB976768; KB980842) included in the 3.0 SP2 update for it to install and work correctly; but if the included files in those KBs are already of the higher version then the package (for KB976768; KB980842) does not need to lay them down on the box.

On the second question just send me a mail with the exact command line you are using and we can try a repro and get back. I am assuming that all other scenarios like manual install + install via WU client (WSUS or MU) are all working.

                >>>> On installing the update MS13-004_Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu through command line using 004_Windows6.0-KB2756919-x64.msu the update fails  with exit code 1 while on installing it manually it installs fine.

Thanks,

Vivek Mishra
