Re: Connecting to external boxes

Patrick:

Okay, you got me. It wasn't Scott Good that showed our User Group Web
Services, it was the OTHER speaker that day. And, he does not have a blog
or web site.

*However* I cannot let you go without another link, self-serving as it may
be:

http://www.ns-tech.com/blog/geldred.nsf/d6plinks/DOMO-6VRM8M

:-)

I don't ever remember being referred to as anything close to "Mr. Web
Links" but I guess that it shows that I kinda know where the subject
matter experts live. Either that, or I spend way too much time in the
blogosphere. In any event, thanks for the compliment. I think. LOL!

HTH.

I don't believe that's the case, but it's been quite a while since I
looked
into N2N's capabilities.

Re: Connecting to external boxes

This would have been several years ago -- the ads were first (at least,
first I'd seen them) coming out in Lotus Advisor. I think the network
gurus decided that either the site wasn't live yet (hard to believe,
considering they kept putting in ads) or a DNS server somewhere between
hither and yon was feeding me a bogus IP address.

Regardless, thanks for the recommendation. Do you know -- does it only
work on Windows-based Domino servers?

That's quite odd. I've never had a problem with their site, going back quite
a few years.

Re: Connecting to external boxes

Hmm... Gregg, I spent a fair bit of time surfing Scott's site -- I
haven't been there in a while, so it was time well spent, but I didn't see
anything about Web Services. Lots of good information and great
downloads, of course.

Thanks,
Patrick

Gregg, master of web links -- you must have a heck of a system of keeping
track of the links to sites you like. I don't think I've seen you send
the same link twice -- or are you just that adept at Google?

Thanks for the information, I'll be perusing them shortly.

Re: Connecting to external boxes

Attractive idea, and I like what they are saying on their website, right
up until I found the prices. I'm a peon that doesn't get to play with
numbers attached to currency symbols, but those look high to me. I'll
share it with the people making the budgetary decisions, though -- they
might like enough to put in next year's budget.

You know, I got all excited about their product from magazine ads when
they first released, but for the first six months, I couldn't get their
website to come up. I was afraid they were going to be a vaporware
distributor. Glad to see they are on-line and, per your endorsement, they
have something worthwhile to share.

Thanks for the suggestion,
Patrick

Since it's C#, that means that it is .NET. For connecting Domino to .NET,
one very good option is a product from Proposion called N2N. See here:

http://www.proposion.com/site/proposion.nsf/0e406e203b53eda385256b6c0045401c/cea33a0467a3da4a8525700f0035594f!OpenDocument

It's particularly good if it's the C# programmers who will be doing the work
to do the integration, because what N2N does is make Domino look and
work just like other .NET data sources.

Re: Connecting to external boxes

I don't know how much of this I can disclose in detail, so I will try to
just give the gist.

The idea is that a user can log into the intranet and click on a button to
import certain calendar items from their mail files into the intranet. For
example, meeting entries are likely targets. Once the meeting entry is in
the intranet's database, the system will run some processing based on the
information therein. For what's been shared with me, the main information
that they want is the type of entry (meeting, appointment, etc.), the
date/time, and possibly the description.

And yes, this feels like an unnecessary duplication of information to me,
but that's not the question I was asked to answer. ;-)

Re: Connecting to external boxes

Funny -- in my ignorance, that was the one suggestion I had. The lead
developer on the intranet project seemed to think that wasn't a good
option. I don't know enough to defend the idea, so I didn't get in an
argument with him. And I hope to be on 7.0.2 within a week -- other
research ahead of me before I'm sure I'm ready for that, too.

Sounds like an obvious job for web services (assuming you're using
Domino 7.x)...
