calculated fee?

Hi everybody ;)
Taskcoach is a great program, and I use it every day, when I'm
working freelance.

I do have one question about money management.
When I go to one maintask, which have multiple subtasks, I go to
"bugdget", "revenue", and write the hourly fee to be 200 (no currency
is specified). the task have 100 hours. when this is done, I would
expect the total cost calculated somewhere. Would be exellent if this
calculated cost is shown as a column..

This is called 'Revenue' and 'Total revenue'. The calculation of
revenue is based on hourly fee and time spent though, not on budget,
so you'll have to register effort.

RE: calculated fee?

Well that’s fine, but in every task coach version I have used...

total revenue is 0 on most efforts no matter what, so I was thinking this was more a dev matter

Version 0.70.0, May 12, 2008

Perhaps I have mistaken on how it’s used, if so I’m sorry.

Can you make a little task file that shows the problem?

Thanks, Frank

RE: calculated fee?

Okey.

I did look a little more on this. However it seems I have misunderstood the GUI a little.

Efforts on a specific task will calculate the correct revenue, however there seems to be something wrong in the settings.

http://home.no.net/thor918/taskcoach/taskcoach.jpg

as you see in the properties of the main task, there is no text field for inputting “for this task including sub tasks”

is this done by design or should there be a text field where I marked a red circle in the picture?

Right, the 'for this task including sub tasks' columns displays the
value of the different attributes (time spent, budget left, etc.) as:
"value for this task + sum(values of all sub tasks, recursively)". So,
for in the case of time spent the right-most column shows the total
time spent on this task and all of its sub tasks. However, summing
doesn't make sense for hourly fee, so that's the reason there is no
value in the right-most column of hourly fee.

I'm all ears for suggestions on how to make this more intuitive...

Cheers, Frank

RE: calculated fee?

Hmm,

I read your post several times.

Not sure I completely understand why summing hourly fee makes no sense...

Maybe I’m using the management a little different than others?

This is how I put up the tasks in taskcoach:

Main.tsk

+ ProjectA (task with hourly fee 200)

++ Subtask1, coding the GUI (3 hours)

++ Subtask2, coding the classes (2 hours)

+ ProjectB (task with hourly fee 100)

ProjectA sums up to 5 hours, which sums up to 5*200=1000 Money units.. projectA does not have a payout of the pot before it’s complete.

So summing the hourly fees makes sense to me.

Anyway, if the text fields are designed to not be shown where I had a red circle, I would propose to symbolically separate “for this task” and “for this task including subtask” . a thin line between those to might do it, they are to close at the moment in my opinion. As for the revenue fields, I would much more like them to show

text fields that are greyed out.

Thanks for swift replies. I appreciate that you take your time to write ;)

Re: calculated fee?

Hi Thor,

2008/7/31 Thor S. <thor918@...>:

What I meant was that summing the hourly fee itself does not make
sense. Suppose you have these tasks:
+ Customer XYZ
++ Project 1: hourly fee = 150
++ Project 2: hourly fee = 100

Now what is the hourly fee of the task 'Customer XYZ'? Surely it is
not 150+100. You could argue it should be the average of the hourly
fees of Project 1 and 2, but what if the time spent on Project 1 is
much larger or smaller than on Project 2?

What you call 'hourly fees' here is called 'revenue' and 'total
revenue' in Task Coach.

I agree that the user interface of the task editor dialog can be much improved.
