setting default hourly rate?

Hi,

Is there a way to set a default hourly rate?

My hourly rate doesn't change very often and I'd prefer not to enter
it for each task individually.

thanks,

Nope, that's not possible at the moment. If you would set an hourly
rate would you expect each new task to have that rate automatically?
Or would you still expect to do something, like clicking 'apply
default rate' in the task editor?

Thanks, Frank

I agree with Matt that a default hourly rate would be very nice.

With regard to your question, it seems reasonable that if a default
hourly rate has actually been specified, it should indeed be the default
for newly created tasks?

Perhaps it would also be appropriate if subtasks inherited their parent
tasks hourly rate by default?

Yes, I consider this (the fact that child tasks do not inherit their
parents hourly rate) a bug. If it's not too much trouble, please open
a bug report for this on Sourceforge.

Thanks, Frank

For me the optimal behaviour is that all new tasks would use the
default rate, unless changed after creating the task.

Thinking about this a little further, there are some other defaults
I'd like to apply too, like default categoy(ies) for instance. I
wonder if perhaps it might be better to generalise this and have a
feature for creating custom task buttons. For instance "New Sysadmin
Task", with default rate of $30/hr and category of "sysadmin". Or "New
Print Map Task" with fixed rate of $45 and category of
"publicication", "New Read & Respond to Mail Task", $0 and category of
"correspondence", etc.

I've created a feature request for this,
https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=1934786&group_id=130831&atid=719137

I imagine this would take a fair bit of work to implement. In the
meantime, assuming you agree this is a good idea, if there were some
means of specifying defaults for at least hourly rate using an .ini
file I would jump at it. If this could be accomplished by a
semi-litereate hack script writer please feel free to point me at the
correct RTFM.

many thanks,

Re: setting default hourly rate?

I'd expect new tasks to have the "default" hourly rate, and I'd have to change
that per-task if I wanted to use a different rate.

Matt's idea of a sort of "task template" is interesting, but it seems a bit too
specific and complex to tackle at such an early point in development, IMHO.

Attaching hourly rates to certain categories is an interesting thought...

And, while I'm chiming in, I'd like to say that TaskCoach is the program I've
been waiting for during the last ten years! Go Frank, GO! The composite-task
concept and automatic time-tracking and reporting has been sorely needed for too
long. You'll see an expression of my gratitude at
http://www.taskcoach.org/donations.html very soon.

For the future, I'll be happy to see a more group-compatible (like shared tasks)
version with slicker "views" (graphs?) and reports.
