[ANN] bzr 2.5b6 released

Hi,

This is the sixth (and last (really)) beta of the 2.5 series: 2.5b6

Bazaar <http://bazaar.canonical.com/> is a Canonical project and part of
the GNU project <http://gnu.org/> to produce a free operating system.

2.5.0 is planned to be released in March 2012.

This introduces the support for colocated branches into the '2a' format in a
backward compatible way, fix more glitches in the colocated UI, verify https
certificates for the urllib https client implementation, fix some more
unicode issues and more.

All bugs fixed in previous series known at the time of this release are
included.

The 2.5 API is now frozen as are the strings for translations.

Since this is our very last beta, I'd like to remind packagers and
plugin authors that a special care should be taken to precisely identify
which revisions of which plugins are targeted at the 2.5 series and
ensure that the plugins are compatible with 2.5b6 (and keep paying
attention during the early days of 2.5.0 ;).

A warm thank you to all of you sending feedback, suggestions, even merge
proposals making bzr better !

Bazaar is now available for download from
https://launchpad.net/bzr/2.5/2.5b6/ as a source tarball.

Did this includes a cert bundle as mentioned in http://pad/lv/920455
(see
https://code.launchpad.net/~vila/bzr/920455-ssl-defaults/+merge/90693
for details) ?

No idea about that, hopefully plugins authors will chime in.

Nope, I wasn't aware of that. I get a lot of LP bug spam which I delete after a quick scan.

I have no idea how to get access to SSL cert in the OS X keychain as you describe, so I guess for now I'll have to bundle one and point the ssl.ca_certs config setting at it? Could you send me an email describing what needs to be done?

Ciao,

That seems to be getting it backward. If the current tip revision
(whichever revision that is) is what should be released, then release
it as a newer version and package that version.

It's not ready yet.

That implies that the request to use it for a release should be
rejected, until it is ready. Right?

Wrong. Request to use tip is valid.

And yet it's not ready for such use, as you say. Can you resolve the
contradiction? How can it be both ready for release and not ready for
release?

Ready for beta but not final release.

Correct. bzr 2.5b6 is beta. I'll do the proper release before 2.5 final.

Ben, thank you for reminder.

Ah, thank you.

Once again, the wording “released” in the announcement has misled me. I
think it's likely I'm not alone.

I'm reminded of a running joke in Ocean's Thirteen:

    Rusty: When's opening night?

    Danny: July third.

    Saul: We're going in now? It's already open.

    Danny: It's a soft opening, to test the place before the grand opening.

    Rusty: It's kind of like an out-of-town preview, only it's in town.

    Saul: Soft opening, grand opening. When they opened the Flamingo,
        one day it was closed, the next day it was open. End of story.

The confusion would be much less if these test Bazaar 2.5 availabilities
*leading to* the release were not referred to as “release”.

And it's certainly easy to change the terminology to be less misleading
(“available” is accurate and clear).

Windows installers are now available in the same location.

This is the first beta that includes mandatory checking of
certificates for https connections. The all-in-one installer includes
the curl bundle of extracted mozilla.org certs, but users of the
Python installers and anyone running from source will need to download
these separately:

    <http://curl.haxx.se/docs/caextract.html>

Feedback and suggestions welcome, currently the plan for the final
release is to only check if there is a cert bundle found, rather than
showing an error.

Also changed in this beta, the automatic refreshing in bzr-explorer
that was causing so many issues on windows has been disabled. Thanks
to Alexander for doing that and the new release this morning. Please
report if you still see any problems.

Plugin version changes:

* qbzr updated to 0.22.1
* bzr-explorer updated to 1.2.2
* tortoisebzr updated to 0.6.6b2
