 thank you for your help. I was able to make mplayer work by:

 1) installing the newest version of mplayer and

 2) going:

# modprobe snd-pcm-oss

$ mplayer -v -ao oss -alang eng -slang eng -autosync 30 -dvd-device
/dev/sr0 dvd://1

 the -autosync 30 flag I had to use because the comments were somehow delayed

 I wonder if the delay related to the choice of using oss, but for now
I can watch those very old videos
