Question: Prioritizing unread bookmarks?

I'm curious if anyone is in the habit of prioritizing their bookmarks to read later. If so, what sort of approach has worked for you?

I tend to save lots of random pages to read later, and that list gets to be quite long. But sometimes I'll come across something I really want to read ASAP, or something with a deadline (e.g. ordering concert tickets). I tend not to save these pages to PB, because I'm afraid the important links will get lost in the big list. Instead, I email them to myself or write them down somewhere. This is exactly the sort of habit I'm trying to avoid in the first place!

I'm thinking of creating some special tags for priority, but first I'd like to hear what other people think.

Re: Question: Prioritizing unread bookmarks?

For some reason, I feel like there is a problem with the terms used; bookmarks and read later items. Try to check the attached snapshot of my Chrome's bookmarks bar where you that I have given Pinboard its full power.I used to use Instapaper for my reading list but I then started to save with Pinboard using the "read later" bookmarklet and there is a bookmark called "Unread" where I go directly to my reading list. Another tab for Pinboard notes which I find it simpler and sexier than Google Docs (at least for my needs as a network engineer).

My advice:

  1. Don't save because you just want to save. Save what you think will be useful to you. I went through that stage and I had my account full of bookmarks with 80% of them saved just because *I might need them* while other alternatives are just the same if found via Google.
  2. Practical method; double tags: save read later items as usual but add a special tag similar to "top" in addition to the main tag(s) so when you want to find the top wanted read-later items, use both tags in the search field as tag+top. You might have a lot of items sharing the same tag but top will be surely unique and the only items will be shown are the ones with both tags.
I hope you find that useful.

Regards,

Re: Question: Prioritizing unread bookmarks?

Thanks for your suggestions. We use the Pinboard service in quite different ways. For me, the "read later" list is the primary feature. I'm less interested in creating a set of bookmarks to pages I have already read, though I do add these occasionally.

I'm also different in that I use Google Docs for taking notes. I can see how the Pinboard notes feature would be useful, not to mention speedier to access. However, I really enjoy creating Docs pages on various topics, and I can't imagine changing at this point.

I like your idea of using a "top" tag. I am going to try taking this even further by creating multiple priority tags. This may be overkill, but I'm going to create tags like so:

p:2_less_interesting
p:5_normal
p:6_very_interesting
p:7_truly_fascinating
p:8_important
p:9_urgent

When I add a new unread link, I will type "p:" and this will show me a list of options. The priority is on a scale from 1-9, with 5 being an average item. Links that are of special interest will get a 6 or a 7, and links with practical importance will get an 8 or a 9. I don't think I'll save many items that are less than a 5 because they're probably not worth saving, but I created the 2 option just in case.

I'm sure that some people will read this and think I'm nuts. That's okay - this isn't for everyone. The end goal is that I when go to my list of unread items, I can quickly find the things I'm most interested in first. And I'll be more willing to save important items to Pinboard if I'm confident that they won't get lost in the mix.
