Not sure how relevant this is to your query...  but this might be something 
you may want to consider:

Finding the folder_contents listing quite useful in terms of 'automatic 
navigation', but lacking in terms of the content that could be added to the 
page I cobbled together a 'contents page' in Archetypes (using a custom 
view) and we're setting it as index_html within folders.  It took a fairly 
simple hack to remove the current document from the listed content :)

You can see it in practice at: http://www.engineering.ucl.ac.uk/departments/

We've opted to retain the type, size, date modified etc as a means of 'user 
education' (need to get them used to the concept of doc types etc) but it 
would be a fairly simple matter to adjust this to simply display just the 
title and description...  the main benefit of this over folder_view is it's 
somewhat more compact, as well as the ability to add some descriptive 
content etc above.
