Awesome is a window manager, KDE is a full desktop environment, loaded
with many daemons which handle printing, sessions, sound, and so on.

I know nothing of KDE, but my first guess is that the configuration
you did in KDE relies on a KDE daemon, or some external daemon which
is started with the KDE session. You have to find which one.

I configure my printers with cups, and I have no problem, but this is
not related to awesome.
