State of the Step April 2008

Dear LiteSteppers,

When you least expect it... an update from your friendly LiteStep
Development Team:

Welcome to the April 2008 edition of the State of the Step!

On the agenda this time:

1. The Development Team
2. LiteStep vs. Litestep
3. LiteStep 0.24.8
4. Windows Vista
5. In Closing...

Go!

1. The Development Team
- A(nother) new lineup
-------------------------

Development at a snail's pace... and that's being nice. jugg and I
(ilmcuts) have been working on the core on and off, but that's hardly
enough to fulfill the expectations. Thus we went out recruiting people.
Of the several people we contacted, we are proud to announce that three
have accepted the offer. Welcome, Acidfire, Tobbe, and Xjill!

This means the devteam now is:

Might be worth me pointing out that I get that with Explorer in Vista
too, so it might not be an LS issue... I've never run LS on Vista, so
it's not something LS did to my install either.

Could be a totally different issue, but since it's the same symptoms, I
thought I'd better mention it.

only for those of us in the northern hemisphere! :) I hope the rest of you
are enjoying your autumn!

As far as Litestep/LiteStep, I am fine with either. It seems to me that the
second is slightly more formal than the singlecap version. FWIW. I suspect
that I'll continue to use the first most of the time, since it's one fewer
key to press. :)

Since we are all about alternative, why not "litestep"? e.e. cummings
would be proud. I personally always liked Omar's Litestep wallpaper in
that scribbled white lowercase lettering.

As a side question. Those of you trying out litestep on Vista, is there
a noticeable memory and/or performance difference? I cannot barely stand
using Vista because of the performance.

I too would be interested in info on the LiteStep/litestep/Litestep experience on Vista.

LS is the only reason I'm not on Vista, yet...

The laptop I bought was not the one that I wanted. I had to have a Windows installation for school. They said
that it was platform agnostic, but for my degree, I have to have Office 2007 classes. WTF? I couldn't find an
XP machine with the raw power this one had, nor could I afford the Ubuntu ones from dell.

So I bought a clearance one from Best Buy, shrunk the Vista partition to 30GB and am running Ubuntu on the
other 100 GB partition. Aside from the wireless using ndiswrapper, everything worked out of the box. Even
the little media remote control and media buttons on the laptop to control volume, channels, next and so
on. God I love Linux.

Sorry to go off on a tangent. You know you are a geek when you talk about Linux to friends like you are selling Amway.

Hello, all.

I suppose I looked like I fell off the edge of the world or something.
Just some interesting spells on the health and computer fronts. I am
sorry I dropped so suddenly. That is not usually my way of doing things.
While I can't promise that I won't drop suddenly, my status has moved
into "palliative" which fundamentally means that I am less likely to die
from the treatments now than before! I also get all the pain drugs I
want, which helps some.

When I did check out last, I felt we were close to a better idea of just
*what* it would mean for someone to start using Litestep.

I'm willing to spend some time writing, now, (if I haven't violated
expectations too terribly much). I think I might be able to help with
the material introducing Litestep, based on the feedback of last year.

My interpretation/expectation is that the Litestep community is pretty
much committed to serving first as the "coders' desktop." The biggest
benefits I heard coming back from those who responded to my somewhat
aggressive probes were:

I'm sorry to hear that. I hope things are getting better.

I think the next step is to just go ahead and write up what material you
think is necessary/ appropriate, and see what response you get.

What you discussed sounds interesting and doesn't appear to be much off
basis, and I'm sure everyone would like to see what you come up with.
Just a word to the wise... (based on experience) is that this community
doesn't take much to talking about "what ifs". Write it, make it,
create it, just do it... seems to be the motto. I still forget this
myself some times. So, that said, my suggestion is just start with
something simple, and throw it out there, and keep on going.
