Which quilt

OK folks I recently bought a 3 season Adrenaline Mummy from Golite. It s a nice bag but I find it rather confining. I'm looking at alternatives and a buddy of mine suggested a quilt especially since I am a hot side sleeper.

He suggested the following 3 quilts I'm interested in your thoughts....
or this one but I'm not too fond of the price... http://www.jacksrbetter.com/shop/sierra-sniveller/

I was hoping for a sub 1 lb. if I'm going to switch but the Golite products seem worth the extra bit of weight assuming they aren't too small.

I'm 5' 10" 185 lbs assuming that matters for recommendations.

RE: Which quilt

Weight is a function of rating amongst other things and the lower the rating the pricier the bag.  So you can't expect to find a sub 1lb bag with a 20 degree rating (if you do let me know).  And maybe not even a 40 degree bag.  I have an older model GoLite 20 quilt it's the long version (I'm 5'11" and 200lbs.) it weighs 21oz.  It has been a great quilt for me.  I got it on sale a number of years ago and I've used it down to well below freezing temps.
I think Enlightened Equipement has a great quilt at a super price  http://www.enlightenedequipment.com/revelationx.html
If you want to go lighter but pricier look at Zpacks quilts  http://www.zpacks.com/quilts/sleepingbag.shtml

I think this depends on how warm the person sleeps, if you are looking for safety or comfort, and if anything is being used to supplement the bag warmth.  I have used an early generation nunatakusa ghost quilt to 20f comfortably when wearing a medium weight base + a very warm hat... but I sleep warm.

As to the question of 800 -vs- 900 down, remember that while 900 fill down gives more insulation / weight in ideal conditions, it has a tendency to collapse more quickly than lower fills when damp.  Personally, I would be inclined to delay purchase until the new water resistant down becomes an options from the cottage gear makers. My understanding is that purchasing it in bulk is becoming reasonable, so I would hope we will see them using this down soon.

Re: Which quilt

An additional question that could shed more light on the subject might be will there be a $15-20 benefit in choosing 900-fill over 800-fill.  At what point is critical mass achieved?

JD
PS I use a Nunatak quilt for the winter and a 15.1-oz synthetic quilt for the summer (elevations below 4,000-ft)

Chriss do.

Make one! Ray Jardine sells a kit for half the price  that  those other guy.
If you do not sew then perhaps you can find a seanstress or quilter from a local fabric store
who might do it for $50 and you'd still save $50.
Hope that helps?

Re:Re: Which quilt

Again, I recomend, though I haven't tried it, the ex-ped mat blanket. it har an eighth of an inch padding, can't remember what kind, but i do remember it was the best, then. can be folded in two for a camp mat. insulating floor in the winter, of course i recomend the eureka apex series as a 4 season tent... so. but anyway, that's a good option. oh and it's drop ass cheap. on a lighter, even more frivolous note, has anyone checked out the new survivalist backpacking magazine? i miss the old days when those guys had to carry around SUV apparatus.

Re: Which quilt

As for going from a bag to a quilt its a great feeling, more freedom of movement. but you have to pick the right one. Factor in if you are a warm sleeper or cold then the length. was using a MH Phantom 32 sleeping bag before the switch.

http://www.enlightenedequipment.com/revelationx.html

Purchase the Enlighten Equipment Quilt 4 months ago.... 30 degree 6 ft reg / half tapered and 30% overfill.

So far used it on 2 trips goes down to what I need. will not go back to a regular sleeping bag for 3 season camping again. I use this in a Squall 2 tarptent with a 1.5" 3/4 inflatable pad & silk liner ( keeps it clean). Now as for me I'am a warm sleeper at 6'2" and want a quilt good to 20-25 degree that's why the overfill.

Good luck on your choice of which Quilt

Mike
