I have fired the Glock and the XD side by side, and much preferred the 
XD.  I have a 1911 full-size, and it's nice too.
I'm wondering what else (like the High Standard mentioned) is out there 
that I don't know about.

Full size and a compact...

I had an HK USPc .45ACP for a while.  It was my first carry gun.  If you
like the feel it is a great gun but the feel is very love it or hate it.
