I was a heavy smoker for about 10 years and I quit with the help of snuff. It is indeed very difficult to do even with a nicotine replacement therapy. I have noticed, however, that snuff is far easier to pick up and put down. I've snuffed for around 2 years now and only very rarely do I get withdrawal symptoms if I haven't had snuff for several hours to a day. I'm not sure if I should say that snuff is less potent and hence lends itself to less intense withdrawal or if it is something else entirely. With cigarette smoking there is an additional sensation in the lungs that snuff doesn't completely have a counterpart to.

Now as to your lack of apparent addiction to cigarettes, that is due to the fact you are smoking only half a pack per month, that doesn't lend itself to strong addiction in most people. The nature of addiction is in the repeated introduction of a chemical substance into the body producing a physical dependence. The exact mechanism will differ depending on the substance.

As to something being "only in your head" I might agree with that somewhat, one might recognize that all sensations ultimately are due to the brain's interpretation of a stimulus. No worries, it doesn't mean you're crazy. ;)
