Re:How many of you have been struck by a vehicle

Although I've ridden lots of miles, many commuting over the years, I've never been struck by a vehicle. I've
had some extremely close calls, one of which was my own stupid fault. I've actually crashed on my commmute
twice. Once my clipless pedal stuck. This caused me to fall into moving traffic but they missed me. The
other time I hit a bent over speed limit sign that was hidden in the shadow of a tree. Yeouch.

I attribute my good safety record to three things. First is my riding style. I'm very defensive, I'm law
abiding, and when necessary, I don't hesitate to take action to keep drivers from doing something stupid
(like right hooking or passing when it's not safe). Second, my commute is reasonably low risk, if there is
such a thing. There's a half mile section where people want to pass when they shouldn't and another half
mile where right hooks are extremely likely. The other 5 miles aren't too bad. Third, somebody must be
protecting me since my record is definitely better than my abilities.

RE: Re:How many of you have been struck by a vehicle

I have been hit once. 5:30 AM light rain in the dark an opposite direction
vehicle did a left turn in an intersection right into me. I bounced very
well off the hood of the vehicle no damage occurred to me. I did have a
light on but was wearing typical dark cycling clothing. I now have the
brightest yellow jacket with reflective material on it.

Latest crash: strong power stroke in intersection proved my shoe was not
properly clipped in. Foot made contact with the ground chain wheel struck
the back of my leg penetrating the skin giving it excellent traction.
Therefore it climbed up my calf for nine teeth (counted scars) lifting bike
off the ground. This started a chain of bad bounces which end with my flying
over the handle bars and landing on my head and shoulder as I rolled. Helmet
absorbed impact and broke but left my head in one piece. Just another rider
malfunction :-)
