Adding groups en masse

Hello,

As I notice a Gmane admin has been active on this list recently, I
decided it might be a good time to ask this ;)

We have more than a dozen Google Groups mailing lists that we would like
to add to Gmane, all with similar options and similar descriptions /
URLs. I guess it might be easier for the admins (and me) if I just
provide a big list here instead of doing separate subscriptions for each
one of the lists.

So, can you please subscribe the following groups?

-------------------------------- ----------------------------------------
Google Groups name Desired Gmane name
-------------------------------- ----------------------------------------
lmonade-devel gmane.comp.mathematics.lmonade
sage-algebra gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.algebra
sage-announce gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.announce
sage-combinat-commits gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.combinat.cvs
sage-finance gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.finance
sage-flame gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.flame
sage-git gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.git
sage-grid gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.grid
sage-gsoc gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.gsoc

sage-matroid gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.matroid
sage-notebook gmaen.comp.mathematics.sage.notebook
sage-nt gmane.comp.mathematics.sage.nt

Yikes! I sent this prematurely, it is missing a lot of information!
Sorry about that!

For the record, I've just now sent subscription requests for all these
groups through the web interface.

Thanks,

Not using the usual way is actually _more_ work for an admin.

OK, I wasn't sure. I'll input this data via the website then. My
mistake!

If I may ask one favor, though, which is not covered by the form on the
website: among the groups I mentioned, the group "sage-notebook" was
supposedly already registered in Gmane but is not receiving any mail.
The admins of the google group cannot find any subscription request from
Gmane, which would explain that. Would it be possible to resend Gmane's
subscription request to the group "sage-notebook"?

Thank you for all your work!

No worries - the system used by the admins makes it easiest to handle
requests that come through the website :-)

Google Groups have notoriously been working great, then not working,
then working sometimes, then working great again.

Let me just try sending a subscription request...

Ok - I got a reply from Google Groups that "sage-notebook requires owner
approval for join requests."

  Best regards,

    Adam

OK, so does this usually mean the admin of our group should see a
subscription request from Gmane? Or does it mean that Gmane gave up
subscribing because the Google Group had this restriction?

I have sent a message to the group asking the admin to check for a
message from Gmane - now to wait and see if one arrived.

Thanks for checking it out for me!

The list admin says:

There is an anti-spam question that new users must answer which I guess
Gmane's logic ignored, and was thus autodenied... So, can we know the
email address that Gmane used to subscribe to the list? Would it use the
same email address for any other lists that we get Gmane to subscribe to
in the future? (I guess we should only add Gmane's email address to the
members of a Google Group after confirming that it is ready to receive
messages - i.e. after I get an email telling me so, like I did for
sage-notebook some months ago.)

I don't think so. I believe it uses an unique subscription address for
each subscribed mailing list.

Just a gmane user here, but based on past discussions here on
gmane.discuss, that is indeed the case. I believe I've seen the
subscription email address posted in several cases while they were
debugging, and IIRC they were of a form similar to
gmane.whatever.group+somenumber <at> gmane.org , which is obviously group
specific, plus what appeared to be either a try-number or a small-
magnitude random number.

(I'm going from memory and that's unlikely to be the specific format
used, thus the "similar to". I just remember seeing the two elements and
thinking "Hmm. That's interesting. Seems reasonable.")

Yes. At least, I think that's what Google Groups does with these
requests, but it's Google, so who knows? :-)
