Re: RDP 8.5 Announced

Based on what I read in the announcement letter, the only enhancement for
the i based product is the live outline.
While this is a nice touch, I would have hoped for more improvements.

Re: RDP 8.5 Announced

For those of us that are eager for real-time outline updating, that is a major enhancement. I'm also eager
for the next update because I have 5 APARs that I hope will be fixed in that release.

I'm also curious about the compile enhancements.

After another 3-day weekend, I immediately went to my WDSCi folder in hopes for hearing more about the
upcoming release that Edmund had teased us with. And finally we get word. Thanks for the post, Sam. Makes
for a great start of the week.

Eagerly awaiting June 15.

Re: RDP 8.5 Announced

They like to put the word COBOL in all of the announcements, but they never
seem to say if COBOL will get the new feature or not? Then when you
download it you find out COBOL was left out again like always. Can't wait
for the new RPG feature oh wait I use COBOL..... :).

COBOL does not have the live outline update (for IBM i). The AIX COBOL
support has been dramatically improved. Please get people to vote for the
IBM i COBOL live model. The dramatic community support for RPG live
outline RFE made it possible for us to staff up a good team to tackle this
for RPG. For a while it was the highest voted RFE in all of Rational. You
guys are making a difference!

Re: RDP 8.5 Announced

So I am confused, as a small company not planning on going away from COBOL
anytime soon, are we going to get pushed to this AIX COBOL at some point?
Did IBM need to create an AIX COBOL for marketing purposes? Why did AIX
COBOL have to be created to get COBOL enhancements or COBOL RDP
enhancements? As a younger programmer just trying to understand IBM's
direction with COBOL.

Re: RDP 8.5 Announced

AIX is the version of Unix that runs on IBM POWER hardware. AIX COBOL is the
COBOL compiler for that operating system. It doesn't run on the IBM i operating
system. If you're 'pushed' to AIX for some reason you may be 'pushed' to the
AIX COBOL compiler, but you won't be 'pushed' to it while you're running IBM i.
Clear?

Yes that makes sense. Will just have to get use to a COBOL enhancement
from IBM that might not affect the operating system we are running.

Jeff

I believe you should never be using the AIX COBOL perspective to develop
for the IBM i - different animals - COBOL for IBM i is done through the
Remote Systems LPEX editor, as usual.

I think! Being an RPGer at heart!

Re: RDP 8.5 Announced

Sorry to create any confusion
Dave has done a great job of clearing things up.
Before RD Power 7.6 in Apr 2010, our product group was focused exclusively
on the IBM i.
We now support developing applications on the AIX (IBM Unix) and Linux
operating systems on the same hardware.

The COBOL compiler on AIX shares technology with System z (IBM mainframe)
so it was relatively easy to share COBOL tooling with our sister product
targeting System z (Rational Developer for z or RDz).
The COBOL compiler on IBM is newer (and better in many respects) but
because it is different, it will require substantial investment to make the
AIX/z COBOL tooling work for IBM i.

IBM is listening to you, as this current release shows with many of your
highest voted RFEs done, in spite of being very expensive. So please vote
on COBOL RFEs. You will get our attention (and believe me, I am letting
our management know about these notes as well).

Re: RDP 8.5 Announced

You can check simply by going to the Installation Manager (not from the
Help menu!) and see if it finds the update.

RD Power 8.5 will not be available via Update in Installation Manager. It
is a new release. You will need to download it and install. It can
coexist with RD Power 8.0.x in separate package groups.

If you are on software subscription, I think you would be 'entitled' to the
new release (but I'm not an expert on that).

Re: RDP 8.5 Announced

There is also some enhancement to the iSeries Projects as well as
integration in the RSE view of the Database functions when the free IBM
Data Studio (a superset of the Database perspective from what I've seen)
is co-installed with RD Power. I don't know yet what those new menu
options will actually do.

Also, on the RFE site, there are 8 that now have a status of Planned for
future release, including the outline one, so I'm hopeful to see all of
them.

Have a nice day.
Thierry.
