Re: Fw: RDP 8.5 Announced

   Hi everyone,

I just subscribed to this list starting today and looking through the
recent archives I saw this comment that I thought I should respond to.

I am a member of the RD Power development team, and I work on the AIX
   COBOL tools.

When the AIX COBOL tools were being created at first, we were able to take
advantage of the COBOL tooling that was created for System z. Although
this took some effort, it was relatively easy since the COBOL language is
almost exactly the same for AIX and System z (the compilers share parsing
technology). On the other hand, IBM i COBOL is significantly different
from AIX and System z COBOL. Now that we have a common COBOL tooling
component, with no system-dependencies, for AIX and System z, that does
make it a little easier to bring this to IBM i as well. However, that
said, with the significant language differences there is still a lot of
work that would be needed to bring the full set of tooling to IBM i.

A first step towards this kind of support would be bringing the outline
view up to the level of the AIX COBOL one. The best way to ensure that
you see COBOL enhancements is to vote for those RFEs. We really try to
please our customers, and we do listen, as we showed by delivering some of
your most voted for RFEs in 8.5.

Re: Fw: RDP 8.5 Announced

Hi Rick,

Good to have you here.

I am an IBM i COBOL developer of 25 years and despite the COBOL tooling falling behind the RPG I must say that
RDPi is the best tool I have ever used and very much appreciate all the work that has gone into the product.

Thanks for explaining how it has evolved and I will, if I haven't already, vote for all of the COBOL related
RFEs. I do hope that more enhancement of the IBM i COBOL tooling can be done.

Best regards,

I will agree also, have messed some with PDM and agree WDSC/RDP is a
wonderful enhancement to PDM. Luckily when I started they had just got
WDSC 5, so never really had to code much in PDM, so I probably don't
appreciate the enhancements of WDSC/RDP as much as other COBOL programmers
(What amazes me is I am still trying to get some to move to RDP). Still
just want to make sure the IBM i COBOL developer isn't completely forgotten
about on upgrades, since that is the hand I am dealt.:).
