question

I have a question. Does WinEdt have abbreviation option(I think
yes)? I mean that, say, I typed a key "f" and some special key (like F1,
or Esc, C-alt, ), and the word "fibration" appeared. So, I must organize
somewhere the abbreviation "f" for the word "fibration". Can you tell me
how can I do it? (Of course, I can do it via TEX macros, but I do not
want it).

Thanks

Yuli

If you want "simple" abbreviation substitution ("f"->"fibration"), you can
enable and configure it in "Options->Dictionary manager" dialog, on "Abbrv." tab
page.

Otherwise (if you want to make substitution only after pressing some functional
key such as F1, Esc), as far as I know, you have to write your own macro (also
you can create a chain of popup menus).

Dictionary Manager -> Abbreviations is the easiest way to set
up such completion. This one is easy and does not assume any
familiarity with macro language or Regular Expressions.

Active Strings can be used as well (but that may require some
macro knowledge).

Advanced users could accomplish more custom behavior by writing
a macro script that reads the substitutions and can be assigned
any shortcut to trigger completion (some RegEx familiarity
would be required).

Re: question

Dear A. N. Kuznetsov

Thank you for the answer (Большое спасибо за ответ).

However, I still do not understand.

When I open the "Option-Dictionary manager Abbr", there are fields

enable (with box) and

Trigger string, and a big field below.

Where should I put "f", "fibration", and how will it look in the text?
Will the word appear just after "f [space]"?

Thank you in forward.

RE: question

You should check the enabled box and put

"f" = "fibration"

in place of the defaults ("etc" and "\beg") or after them if you also find them interesting.

After that typing "f " automatically generates "fibration" if you are starting a new word (after delimiter
or end of line).

The blanks after f triggers the abbreviation.
It is contained in the "trigger string" box and possibly it can be changed but in fact I could not succeed
testing it.

Re: question: abbreviations?

Hello,
If you want to play with abbreviations, why not consider the abbrv macro available at http://www.winedt.org/Macros/text/ . It's very handy, simple to install and use.

Re: question

Dear Daniele

Thank you very much for the answer.

I did it, but I does not work. Probably, my WinEdt has bugs (or I am
stupid).

Don't mention it (Не за что).

You should check "Enabled" checkbox, and leave empty the nearest field (this is
a "mode filter". For example, if you want to use abbreviations only in TeX and
ASCII mode, than you write "TeX;ASCII" here).

The "Trigger string" contains string, that triggering abbreviation expansion. By
default it set to " " (space, without commas), so expansion will be only if
space key, pressed after abbreviation. By design, you can specify another string
(for example "_" or "__"), but it seems, that there is a bug in WinEdt 5.5
20071003 (it always thinks, that last character in "Trigger string" is a space).

Abbreviation substitution in form
"f" = "fibration"
(with commas and equal sign) should be placed in a big field below
(abbreviations must be written in one per line).

> Will the word appear just after "f [space]"?

Yes, if you use default "Trigger string".

If you can read Russian better, than I write in English, you can read Russian
explanation below:

   Флажок "Enabled" включает/отключает замену целиком.
Рядом с ним находится
поле фильтра. Оно используется в случае, если замена
нужна не во всех режимах
документов. Например, если нужна замена сокращений
только в режимах TeX и ASCII,
то в это поле помещаются наименования этих режимов
(TeX;ASCII). Если поле
пустое, то замена работает во всех режимах.
В строке "Trigger string" указывается последовательность
символов, которая
должна идти за аббревиатурой, чтобы произошла
замена. По умолчанию там пробел.
Но, если задать "__" (без кавычек), то замена на "fibration"
произойдет после
того, как в тексте будет написано f__. Но в версии 5.5 20071003
этот функционал
работает неверно. Программа всегда считает, что
последний символ в "Trigger
string" это пробел.
Замены для сокращений, по одной в строку, пишутся в
нижнем поле. Синтаксис
для замен следующий:
"f" = "fibration"
(включая кавычки и знак равенства).

This is brilliant : if everyone made their posts
bilingual, we could all learn a second language
whilst discussing WinEDT :-)))

Celui-ci, c'est une bonne idee : si chacun faisait
leurs messages bilingue, nous pourrions tout apprendre
une deuxième langue tout en discutant WinEDT

I have WinEdt: Build: 20080429 (v. 5.6) . Do you know if there are

Now it works.

After making the things in the dictionary, I closed WinEdt and open it
again. And it works.
