Re: (GRE Success! ) guys..help need! pls comment on final list of univs!

Its quite a mix of schools. the 590 might come back and hurt you, but since the format changed and everything I wouldnt worry too much about it. What was the reason for your choices of schools? Except Gatech none of the schools seem to have the glam. factor. USC - funding is a big issue...doesn't get much better with others, but here you are pretty much fighting harder. Other schools are as I said in the mid to low range.

Re: (GRE Success! ) guys..help need! pls comment on final list of univs!

well.
Where did you do your Mtech in?
If it was IIT or IISc it could turn things in your
favour...

Gatech ---> Requires the AGRE (GRE computer science
Subject test).. so you cannot apply there if you
haven't taken the AGRE (it was over on Nov-12).

UMass <at> Amherst ---ambitious , intake is very low

UC davis, and UC SB are both ambitious and expensive..
I think Stony brook would be the place to go if you
want any remote chances of funding..

NCSU is good.. but there is usually no funding at
all... things might be different for a PhD though.

Safes??
Is there any point in doing a PhD frm a safe bet univ?
further i donot know the quality/reputation of a PhD
frm safe bets...

the general super safe univs are IIT chicago, NJIT (to
some extent) etc

You have blunlty put a "Suggest some universities
doing good research in CS"....

c'mmon man, you are an MTech.. whats your FIELD OF
INTEREST?
Area of Interest in PhD?? coz to answer your query we
should know your area of interest, a generic statement
on the reputation of Universities for PhD CS wouldn't
be of much use.

Re: (GRE Success! ) guys..help need! pls comment on final list of univs!

Hi,

Well if you are applying to the Dept of Computer
Science at GATECH you need to take the AGRE...
re-check that.

For the Electrical Engineering dept (like DSP and
stuff) you don't need the AGRE coz there aint no AGRE
for EE.

there is a course on Information Security MS at Gatech
that does not require the AGRE.

But for MS/PhD in CS, YOU MUST SUBMIT AGRE SCORES.

"I had mentioned it in my first mail.."

May be you did, but most of us here check mails at
random.... we might have missed your earlier mails/not
remember your profile.
So it is good to give a complete profile of yours in
each mail.

as of specialisation in Sensor/Wireless Networks
etc... iam sorry i donot know pretty much about univs
that are good in that area.

Hope it helps.

Regards
vatsan.

(GRE Success! ) help need! pls comment on

I would say, any MTech is of worth. The hype surrounding the IITs and IISc are going away, thanks to the genuine efforts of several equally qualified students from other students. Honestly, there is nothing so great about them that should place them more than a notch above other schools. If schools in the US are mortal enough to be tied in by hype, that is their own problem.

UCSB and Davis are not that too ambitious. With a Nobel under their arm they might dance like charmed lions, but they do need qualified students, and why would I choose them as opposed to another one. I agree with Amherst though. The intake is ridiculously low to make the school unworthy of your goals.

Other than that, it definitely always helps to have a singular goal (at the most two) in terms of a field of interest. Don't worry, things always can c hange and most if not all schools in the US are fluid in lending ear to your change of plans. This, goal based approach is very useful for your applications though.

Good Luck.
