(GRE Success! ) Need advise..

Hi All,
I am very new to this group - very much new to GRE too. I did go
through the files section to ensure that i dont waste too much of ur
time by asking the same questions - but i still have my questions
unanswered. I have started to prepare for GRE starting today and am
aiming at joining for fall-2007. I have no clue as to what needs to
be done and I do not have any one to guide me. I have 3yrs of work
experience and i come from a middle class back ground. So money is a
biggest concern for me and is one of the reason why i didnt think
about GRE. Now i badly want to do my MS. I would be forever greatful
if any of you could please advise on what all needs to be done from
now and be my guide in my process of getting an admit. I am good at
quants but I am not very good at vocabs. I have a ok acads but i
dont have any papers on my name. I would like to know how long does
an average person takes to prepare for GRE. I am currently in the US
for an assignemnt and am planning to join a GRE coaching class once
i return to india in May. Could you also suggest on any good
consultant in Chennai - I also need to know the time frame before
which i should take GRE if I need admission for Fall - 2007
I sincerely thank all your help in this regard
Somya

Re: (GRE Success! ) Need advise..

Welcome to the group. Thank you for looking at the files! As you can see you have unique and broadbased questions, so it might not be possible to thrust readymade answers at you.

Congratulations on the start of the preparation!

You now have us to guide you. Please do not consider joining a 1000 groups. It will clog your email list and not be of real worth to you. Do join other groups if you will, but limit by number and quality.

Money is an issue that most grad students face, no matter what their backgrounds are. You will have to realize that graduate education in the US is competitive and fewer and fewer students are getting funded before they arrive here. Some do compromise on the ranks of the schools under the very acceptable assumption that it should not matter where you gain knowledg e.

We encourage you to think through this problem for yourself. Depending upon your academic skills, previous performance and other attributes, you might get admitted into very good programs, but not with financial assistance at the get go. Some people do take the risk of coming here and trying out -- 99.99% of us succeed in finding funding eventually, but it comes with risk and a minimum obligatory spending over unspecified periods.

We do not recommend any GRE coaching centers. They add little value to you.

Since you are in the US and can spare some time, then you could visit the schools you like and seek the prospects for financial assistance. This could prove to be very useful to you since it is very hard to visit the schools on grad admit days and so on. Talking to people whose work you like and making connections in person is very valuable, so I strongly encourage you to consid er spending the remainder of your time doing that here.

May would be a good time to start preparations depending upon where  your skills lie in the spectrum, and you could potentially take the exam in July/August.

It will take a full two months, given that you are employed full time (and automatically assumed over time!) to prepare your statements, essays, bank documents, transcripts, resume and other application materials.

This will bring you to October/Nov beginning by which time you should seriously consider dropping off your applications in the mail and then tracking them, making sure the schools have received everything. Simultaneously you could establish/re - establish conversations with Professors leading research in various schools.

All this, is in line for 2007.

Please feel free to ask as many questions as many time s as you please.

Good Luck,

Srihari
