(GRE Success! ) Comport, Grammar problem and a couple of tips....
Hello Everyone,
Glad that Anahita, Rajesh and Gangeya decided to play.
Yes, comport means to agree with, or empathize with. Good work!
Rajesh got it right with the grammar - it should have been the continuing or a continuing. There are certain places where "an" prefixes a verb, but it is typically in front of a word that starts with a vowel, or when "h" is appropriately silent.
As to the commas, it is common practice in the English (British) style of writing to include a lot of commas, even when unnecessary. I myself am a big victim of this. The idea is every time you stop at a comma, you are expected to pause for emphasis, and yes, sometimes this tends to be an overkill, as I have done in this sentence! :)
A couple of tips:
1. If you still don't know, you can always go to Google.com and plugin define:comport or any word for that matter, and Google.com will list the word, the phonetic pronunciation and link to an audio (I am not sure if this is the case always, but it probably is) on how to pronounce the word.
2. In India, there is a famous text of British origin for Grammar, titled, "Wren & Martin". I am sure you can find copies of this book. You could get this, and improve your grammar skills. This book is replete with examples and exercises. Remember though, for the GRE, TOEFL and GMAT, you need to focus on American Grammar structure.
Please provide feedback on how this game can be improved.
Good Luck,
Srihari

Hello Shrihari,Its good to have the word game back. I have been a silent reader for long time now. This game will open up an excuse for members to participate who have not been indulging in posting or replying to questions and queries.I'll try to define the word now.Comport: To agree or have similarity with.On Tue, May 1, 2012 at 1:03 AM, Srihari Yamanoor <yamanoor-Re5JQEeQqe8AvxtiuMwx3w@public.gmane.org> wrote:Hello Everyone,
We used to do this a while ago. I thought since our email volume has gone down, we could play this again. Here is a word, that without a dictionary, using etymology and context, I would like you to try to define with a synonym or at least a phrase. We can then confirm what it actually means. Please ignore the politics, etc.“It is our belief that not only is that the right thing to do, because it comports with our belief in freedom and human rights, but also because we actually think China will be stronger as it opens up and liberalizes its own system,” Mr. Obama said as he appeared with Japan’s prime minister, Yoshihiko Noda, at the White House.Source: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/05/01/world/asia/talks-between-china-and-united-states-over-dissident-chen-guangcheng.htmlSincerely,Srihari--
