Re: Editorship
In AACR2, the decision to add the designations of function comp., ed., ill. and tr. is an optional one. See 21.0D: "Optional addition. Designations of function." The same rule says, "In specialist or archival cataloguing, when desirable for identification or file arrangement, add designations from standard lists appropriate to the material being catalogued." The LCRI to 21.0D says, "LC practice: Do not apply the designations of function specified by AACR2. Exception: The designation 'ill.' will be added to the headings for illustrators occurring in added entries in bibliographic records for resources intended for children. "Note that LC does apply the part of the rule that provides for using designations in specialist or archival cataloging from standard lists appropriate to the material being cataloged." Therefore, libraries adhering to the letter of AACR 2 and the LCRI will not add these designators to headings for most materials. -------------------------------------------------------- Kathie Coblentz, Special Collections Cataloger The New York Public Library Humanities and Social Sciences Library kcoblenz@... ***********************************************************************(Continue reading)
