Looking for Suggestions

Hello fellow librarians:

I am looking for suggestions on what I could put on a new sign at our
Reference Desk - "to drum up business"

Our IT department recently began sharing our Reference Desk with us and
we are beginning to be overshadowed. We need to stake our claim and
announce our presence a little louder.

Right Now the sign is dull just suggesting that "you can get help with
research" or "please ask questions".

I am looking for something that will Market the Reference Desk and our
services and catch the students attention.

I will take any and all ideas.

Thanks in advance -

Re: Looking for Suggestions

The reference desks in our graduate library now have signs with two foot high letters: ASK US

Re: Looking for Suggestions

In the same way that "Naked News" has spiked an interest in news amongst the
great unwashed, you could perhaps spike an interest in reference services by
offering "Naked Reference" on your signage...
Hope this helpful,
Patrick.

Re: Looking for Suggestions

Well, let's see .... when I was a college freshman, registering for classes,
the Chair of Classics (with whom I was talking) and the Chair of Russian
shared a table. Suddenly the Russian professor, who was feeling lonely,
stood up, and (looking for all the world like a Babushka doll), spread her
arms and called out dramatically, "Come to me my dollinks, I haf no
subjunctive!"

I'm not sure that it "drummed up business" for Russian classes, but it was
certainly an arresting tactic.

Anyhow, a slightly outrageous sign for the reference desk sounds like a good
idea.

Re: Looking for Suggestions

Hi, Darci,
First: what does the IT sign say? Can you play with their wording?
Second: what do their desk staff look like; what do your staff look
life? What image does that project to your users? Do you need a revamp?
About 30 years ago I wrote an article for New Zealand Libraries about
non-verbal communication and librarians which I think is still relevant.
Carol Johnson in NZ: could you locate it? It would have been 1979-1982.
Cheers,
Roger

One of my reference librarian colleagues suggests:

How about a sign that says,

"We're the I and they're the T"

Re: Looking for Suggestions

Could you make naming the station a patron contest? Maybe for the
incoming freshmen going through bibliographic instruction, if you have
such classes, or open it up to the entire student body. That way, you'd
be familiarizing the students with the fact that Reference and IT share a
desk, and at the same time getting them involved in the library in a
personal way.
