Re: [ACAT] MetaLib cataloging
Hi Sally, Here at CSU we have a "Database of Databases" that is home-grown and is managed by public services and computer support services (not me) that uses a Broad Subject and a Narrow Subject controlled vocabulary developed by our public services librarians. So those terms are selected when a resource is added to that list. I have set up our categories to mirror their Broad Subject terms and use their Narrow Subjects in the keyword field. I also use the DB of DB to determine possible alternate titles. I usually log into the native interface and take the description of the resource from the resource itself (usually there's an "about this database" link somewhere on the site". Occasionally there is no such link so I use the 520 summary note in the bib record for the resource from our OPAC. Ditto for coverage and time frame. This is entirely a manual process. Some time ago (about 18 months ago, if I recall correctly) I did a synchronization project to make sure the resource description in the IRD matched the 520; that the Categories in ML and assigned to the IRD matched the DB of DB Broad/Narrow subjects, and that the coverage dates of the resource were entered correctly in both ML and the DbofDB. All manually. One of our whizzes here in the library set up a notification system (using e-mail notification) anytime there is a change in the DB of DB, so I am alerted if new Broad Subjects/Narrow Subjects are created, changed, added to, removed from, etc. the DB of DB records for the resources. Again, I make the changes in MetaLib manually. I, too, would love to find a way to repurpose the data from either the(Continue reading)
