Speaking of popular culture, if you're a fan of The Office (I've only seen the U.S. series, not the original one) you might find some relevant episodes. I used an episode on "sensitivity training / diversity day" in class last semester in one of my classes and the discussion was quite productive. In part because it's timely / popular / hip, the students enjoyed looking at in the context of race, ethnicity, class, gender, and sexuality.

I'm just now having coffee but what comes to mind are Glengary Glen Ross
and Office Space. Both are great for hierarchy, alienation, work/life
issues.

Subject: TEACHSOC: Looking for films for sociology of work
I am looking for a film for a class in sociology of work, to be shown at the beginning of the semester which, iddeally, would cover a broad range of work issues including status, alienation or engagement, hierarchy, education and skill, gender differences etc. But I recognize that is a tall order and would settle for something that would cover a few of these.
I know Rosie the Riveter, and may use it, but I would appreciate other suggestions.
My course covers the history of work from hunting and gathering to the computer age, followed by some theoretical anchors (Marx, Weber, Taylor, Braverman), then specific topics; women, minorities, contingent workers, immigrants, unions.
thanks
Jack
