Ubuntu/Emacs22/Gnus

I decided to upgrade my office machine to the newest Ubuntu (8.04/Hardy).

Unfortunately, 'gnus' failed to work from the very start (problems
with 'gnus-load', ...).

Does anyone have Gnus running with Emacs22 on Ubuntu?

I removed Emacs22 and installed Emacs21 and Gnus is usable (it is what
I'm using now to post this article), but doesn't seem quite right".

Thanks for any ideas!

Kenneth:

Try running with "emacs --debug-init" and the check the *messages*
buffer. This should give you a better Idea as to whats going wrong.

Hi, Prof. Jacker. I notice that the gnus version 5.11 which you are
posting with is the same as in Emacs 22.2.1 (on Windows XP). Do you
know what version of gnus comes with the Ubuntu update?

The Gnus in Ubuntu is not byte-compiled for the emacs22 package, so
Emacs will use the one that comes with Emacs which may lack some
feature that you want in your .gnus.el. See
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnus/+bug/133621.

Forget about the Gnus that comes with Ubuntu, it is completely
unmaintained, very outdated and lacks documentation
(https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnus/+bug/227925).

See http://gnus.org/distribution.html how to get a newer version.

Ubuntu, like Debian, uses some munged site-lips/autoload system from what
I can gather and installing from source is not that straightforward. I
may be wrong and things have changed. Just a heads up on that one and

OK, I'm now successfully running Emacs22 and Gnus (gnus-5.10.10.tar.gz).

Thanks to everyone who replied to my "plea for help"!

PS It is hard to believe that Ubuntu doesn't support Emacs22/Gnus ...
that combo contains two of my *most used* applications ...

Why don't you just use the Gnus that is part of Emacs 22?

That's what I did the first time ... it didn't work ...

Are you using it? What version is it?

Well, I am using developer versions of Emacs, anyway. But I don't
remember anything wrong with gnus before we forked off the Emacs 22
release branch.

Kenneth, FWIW, I used the Gnus version bundled with the ubuntu emacs22
package with no problems, and am currently using the ubuntu
emacs-snapshot package, which also contains gnus, again with no
problems. As dak pointed out there seems to be no need now to install a
stand alone gnus, the tramp package I think also falls into this
category.

Hmmm ... I wonder why I couldn't get it to work? Maybe I had some
"legacy" config options in ".emacs" and ".gnus.el" that messed things up.

OK, but I don't think I'll change my setup now ("if it's not broken, ...").

Assuming I remember ;-), I'll try using the Ubuntu-distributed version
next time.

Yes, I noticed that it was now included ...
