emacs hangs entering password

Hi,

I am trying to load remote file using ssh but emacs hangs after entering
password. The only way is to kill emacs process.

Following are the messages in emacs '*Massages*' buffer :

Tramp: Opening connection for mchoube <at> pinky using ssh...
Tramp: Waiting 60s for local shell to come up...
Tramp: Sending command `ssh pinky -l mchoube -q -e none && exit || exit'
Tramp: Waiting for prompts from remote shell
Tramp: Sending password

My .emacs contents:

(require 'tramp)

;; (custom-set-variables '(tramp-verbose 0))

(setq tramp-debug-buffer t)

;; (setq shell-prompt-pattern "[A-Za-z]* \[1\]: ")

The remote machine has '/bin/csh' as the default shell.
The shell prompt I get is "pinky [1]: " (on doing telnet/ssh using
putty)

I tried setting shell-prompt-pattern to "[A-Za-z]* \[1\]: " but it
doesn't work.

Re: emacs hangs entering password

This usually works for me in that situation-

hit C-G (control-G) to break out of the hang
M-x tramp-cleanup-all-connections

then retry the Tramp operation

Which Emacs and Tramp versions are you using?

RE: emacs hangs entering password

This is GNU Emacs 22.3.1 (i386-portbld-freebsd7.2, GTK+ Version 2.16.1)

Tramp: 2.1.17

Thanks,
Mehul

Well, in this case please set tramp-verbose to 8, and rerun the
test. There will be two buffers *tramp ...* and *debug tramp ...* which
you might show us.

How to see those 2 buffers? Once the password is entered emacs hangs and
only responds on C-g.

C-x C-b lists you all buffers. You can select the buffer in the Buffer
List; with RET you enter the buffer then.

The buffers might contain non-printable characters; try to encode the
contents before sending, it could be important.

I hope you will pardon my ignorance but I am not able to see the 2
buffers. This is what is happening:

If I do C-x C-b before running tramp the buffer list shows following:

.% *GNU Emacs* 806 Fundamental
  * *Messages*             127  Fundamental
  *scratch* 191 Lisp Interaction

So what I do is

emacs
C-3
C-o
C-2
C-x C-b ----> at this point I see only above buffer list. No *tramp ...*

Tramp buffers are available only when Tramp was active. So you must
inspect your buffer list here.

This time instead of ssh I tried pscp and I am using emacsclient. But it
is continuously prompting me for password though I enter correct
password.
Also this time I was able to get tramp buffers.

Not so simple to debug, because due to security reasons Tramp's traces
do *not* contain any password related entries.

What happens, if you apply in a command shell the command

plink pinky -l mchoube -ssh && exit || exit

Could you, please, show me the whole contents of that CMD shell,
especially the resulting prompt from your remote machine? I assume,
there won't be the password string.

Some non-ASCII characters got lost from my mail. Maybe you apply the
following in your .emacs instead (it is the same setting, finally):

(setq tramp-shell-prompt-pattern
      (base64-decode-string
       "XCg/Ol5cfA1cKVteOiMkJT4KXSpbOiMkJT5dICpcKBtcW1swLTk7XSpbYS16QS1aXSAqXCkq"))

And please restart Emacs, after changing .emacs.

Then it shall work. Hmm, I'm running out of ideas.

Could you retry it, but with tramp-verbose 10? This shall return more
traces, but I don't know, whether we see something.

Another option would be that I try to access pinky myself, debugging
Tramp. But I fear this is impossible, isn't it?

Have you set ´tramp-shell-prompt-pattern' this time? Tramp does not
accept your "pinky [1]: " prompt, again.

My .emacs:

(require 'tramp)

(custom-set-variables '(tramp-verbose 10))

(setq tramp-debug-buffer t)

;; (setq shell-prompt-pattern "[A-Za-z]* \[1\]: ")

;; (setq tramp-shell-prompt-pattern "\\(?:^\\| \\)[^:#$%>\n]*[:#$%>] *\\(^[\\[[0-9;]*[a-zA-Z] *\\)*")
;; "\\(?:^\\| \\)[^#$%>\n]*[#$%>] *\\(^[\\[[0-9;]*[a-zA-Z] *\\)*"

(setq tramp-shell-prompt-pattern
      (base64-decode-string
       "XCg/Ol5cfA1cKVteOiMkJT4KXSpbOiMkJT5dICpcKBtcW1swLTk7XSpbYS16QS1aXSAqXCkq"))

Then I don't know what to do, without debugging. Sorry.

Best regards, Michael.

Re: emacs hangs entering password

Hi Michael,

i am now able to view/edit files from pinky :-)

i am now using opensuse 11.2 as my desktop OS and the emacs is GNU Emacs
23.1.1 (i586-suse-linux-gnu, GTK+ Version 2.18.1). Also i had to put
bash command in the .cshrc on pinky.

Thanks,
Mehul
