ICMP Extensions for Policy-based Routing

ping/traceroute and other network diagnostic tools are widely used
in the IP networks to diagnose the network reachability, IP packet
routing and routing failure location. However, the existing
ping/traceroute tools are adaptable only to the pure networks where
the routing is based on destination address. When an IP packet
passes a certain equipment based on ACL policy routing, the
ping/traceroute packet routing MAY be different from the real
traffic flow routing. This will lead to an erroneous diagnostic
result.

This document presents an ICMP extension solution. The ICMP echo
messages carry the flow description information of the traffic flow
to be diagnosed, during the delivery process, the router routes

Re: ask for advise about "draft-ke-policy-icmp-ext-00.txt"

Thank you for asking.

This document falls within the scope of work that has been and is being
done in some combination of the MPLS, Traffic Engineering, and CCAMP
working groups (I lose track of which working group is tackling which part
of the problem.)

The Policy Framework working group was focused on providing information
models (and sample data mapping of those information models) for IP
activities. As such, this material would not have been within scope for
the working group. Also, we are in the process of closing down the working
group.

Yours,
Joel M. Halpern
